‎On Day 1 of the Belgian lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic Beno t van Innis made a drawing with a black felt-tip pen on an A4 sheet. He sent the drawing to some friends?most of them from the art world?by mail and WhatsApp. On Day 2 of the lockdown, he made a second drawing and again he sent it to his friends and acquaintances. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The drawings were shared on social media and dS Weekblad published an interview and five drawings. The protagonist in these drawings is the artist himself, who reacts to the exceptional situation departing from his own universe. The book Instant Light compiles the entire series of drawings Beno t made in his studio in Brussels. They feature all his favourite subjects: painting, Club Brugge, literature, the world of art and French chanson. The book is published by Posture Editions in a co-production with Be-Part Kortrijk/Waregem, Hof van Busleyden Mechelen and Berg Institute Madrid. The publication is a collection of unique drawings that constitute a personal account of this unprecedented period in our history. It?s as if these stylishly elegant and sometimes virtuoso drawings instantly brighten up this dark page; they also provide an ideal diversion from the countless bad tidings we?re confronted with every day. Beno t van Innis (b. 1960) studied painting with Dan Van Severen at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. Shortly after graduating his drawings were published in De Morgen and De Standaard der Letteren. Since 1989, he has drawn 31 covers for The New Yorker. Beno t is widely known for the eight portraits he created for the tiled walls in the Brussels metro station Maalbeek. ‎The art of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is synonymous with the female nude, with the term 'Rubenesque' first coined in the 19th century to describe a voluptuous female body. Yet remarkably, there has never been a focused study of Rubens' depictions of women, making this book, and the exhibition that it will accompany, a first. Bringing together a diverse range of paintings and drawings from throughout the artist's career and from a range of international lenders, the exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery (October 2023 - January 2024) will challenge the popular assumption that Rubens only painted one type of woman. Instead, it will present a more nuanced view of the varied and essential role that women played in the artist's life and work, uniting and contributing to recent scholarly developments in subjects such as the identities of Rubens' sitters, 17th century artistic theory and practice, and Rubens' treatment of the human body. Rubens evidently enjoyed painting the female figure, especially in its sensual and unclothed form. But his women are never mere bodies trapped by the male gaze, on the contrary; they are proud and complex heroines, full of character and gravitas. No other male artist has created such potent images of female power, assurance, determination, commitment, and beauty. Providing a catalogue for the works in the exhibition and featuring three introductory essays that contextualise Rubens' work, this publication will both contribute to the existing corpus of scholarly literature on Rubens and introduce his masterpieces to new audiences, discussing them in the context of current debates around sexuality, power and feminism. ‎

‎Walter Swennen is a painter, born in Brussels in 1946. Like others of his generation, he approaches and explores the medium in new ways by applying principles from other disciplines. His Dutch-speaking family suddenly began speaking French when he was five years old, and language games accordingly form an integral part of his art. A key constant is the pleasure he derives from the battle with the paint.
