With this masterpiece painting, Bruegel turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own historical time. This is the first comprehensive book on one of the most cherished masterpieces of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. It argues that with his Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562) Pieter Bruegel (died 1569) turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own time, and situates the painting within the early modern cultures of knowledge and collecting. More particularly, it exposes that many of the hybrid falling angels are carefully composed of naturalia and artificialia, as they were collected in art and curiosity cabinets of the time. Bruegel's much noted emulation of Jheronymus Bosch was thus only part of his wider interest in collecting, inspecting, and imitating the artistic and natural world around him. This prompts an examination of the world at the time that Bruegel painted the Fall of the Rebel Angels: locally, in the urban and courtly centers of Antwerp and Brussels on the eve of the Dutch revolt, and globally, as the discovery of the New World irreversibly transformed the European perception of art and nature. Painted as a tale of hubris and pride, Bruegel's masterpiece becomes a meditation on the potential and danger of man's pursuit of art, knowledge and politics, a universal theme that has lost nothing of its power today.

Gabriel Meiring is one of those exceptionally gifted artists who seems to have it all. Not only did he completely transform and review the traditional way of egg-tempera painting, but he also invented the technique of oil-painting on silk. Under the guidance and tuition of great names such as Nadia Boulanger, Nikita Magaloff and Pierre Sancan, he also became an outstanding concert pianist. With flair and ease he can turn his hand to interior design. Furniture, jewellery and fashion design form another outlet for his limitless fantasy and endless creativity. Gabriel Meiring is surely one of the most complete and fascinating artists of our time.

Jan Fabre's latest series of works includes brilliant coral sculptures, as if ready to be offered to a temple, and blood drawings. The practice of comprehension of the mystery makes him dialogue with the artists and alchemists of the Renaissance, who tried to explain both the enigma of human formation and the origin of art on the basis of laboratory research, as well as with those religious writers who tried to understand the essence of the sacrament of marriage, one of the five (or seven) great sacraments, through the detailed study of sanctified texts. Dimitri Ozerkov In Fabre artistic universe, beauty is a daimon that takes on a thousand forms, some even uncomfortable, disturbing, and acts as a bait to communicate a profound sense of life. The tension in his works and the astonishment they arouse are always infused with a spirituality that harmonizes contrasts. The narrated caritas by Fabre is the universal act of love, which survives over the centuries and is all that matters.
