Jef Van Grieken maakte naam als fijnrealistisch kunstenaar, als uitgelezen schilder van landschappen, ruines, van stille stegen en weidse vergezichten, bovenal van die atmosferen die het onderwerp uitmaken en tegelijk boven zichzelf verheffen. Schoonheid schuilt vaak in een klein hoekje, en vanuit dat hoekje schildert Van Grieken zijn imposante en intimistische composities. Kunstcriticus Johan Van Cauwenberge blikt terug op de nieuwe ontwikkelingen die zich voordeden in Van Griekens werk, op wat behouden bleef en wat evolueerde. Hij plaatst hem in de traditie en bespreekt helder en welbegrepen stijl, compositie, gedachtegoed en poetica. Met oog voor detail en gevoel voor geheel, sluiten tekst en beeld naadloos aan. De schitterende kleurenillustraties geven een representatief overzicht van het oeuvre.

Dat grafiek de jongste decennia in het verdomhoekje is geraakt, is een betreurenswaardige evolutie die sommige museumdirecteuren en beleidsmakers in Vlaanderen mee in de hand hebben gewerkt. Gelukkig zijn er ook mensen met een bredere kijk, bijvoorbeeld bij de stad Brugge die een schitterende collectie aankocht, een overzicht van de prentkunst vanaf de zestiende tot en met de twintigste eeuw. De miskenning van de grafiek is vooral veroorzaakt door de kortzichtigheid van enkele invloedrijke mensen uit het wereldje die vinden ?dat het toch maar om prenten gaat? en dat ?origineel werk voorrang verdient?. Een aantal hogere kunstscholen heeft de grafiek als een ars minor afgebouwd en hun studenten dienen zich verder te bekwamen door les te gaan volgen in het Deeltijds Kunstonderwijs. De Vlaamse grafiek kent nochtans ook vandaag meesters die in vele internationale museumcollecties te bewonderen zijn. Kunstenaars als Enk De Kramer (°1946) en Veerle Rooms (°1947) worden in Japan hoog gewaardeerd. Emiel Hoorne (°1951) heeft zich vele jaren onzelfzuchtig ingezet voor de jonge Vlaamse grafici en Marnix Everaert (°1960) ijvert voor een ecologisch en ergonomisch verantwoord gebruik van materialen en technieken en wordt tot ver in het buitenland als leermeester onthaald.

The work of Joke Van den Heuvel (b. 1983) initiates an interaction with (historical) fragmented material that she presents the viewer. The interaction with images concerns a perpetual (re) assembling and constructing /organizing of the now and the past. Van den Heuvel is interested in narratives produced by the barely perceptible, acknowledging that the meaning of images cannot be contained by language. Recordings of repetitive actions and monotonous characters in looping scenes blur the observer?s focus, inducing a kind of blindness towards the object ? a blindness that makes seeing possible again. ?134340 is a fragmentary, juxtaposing anti-story about shifting contexts and transformations, but not because it is intended to analyse processes of meaning for the sake of the analysis. The work expresses above all a melancholy desire to search in the rubble of what is broken, to link together the dots, in the heavens and here below, to make a drawing once again. Not in order to arrive at an unbreakable circle, but to be still truly involved and personal. Which means: building up a subjective resistance to both the fragmentation of images and the urge to let a moving multiplicity implode into a point of meaning.?
