Tim Van Laere Gallery presents Frames, Muller Van Severen's first solo exhibition at the gallery. Over the past 15 years, Muller Van Severen has developed a synergistic body of work that continually explores the boundaries between sculpture and functional object. This exhibition is the first time they present a series of works that are all unique. The exhibition Frames can be seen as a total installation, an all-encompassing universe of form, color, light, reflection and transparency. More than 30 works are brought together in the monumental space of Tim Van Laere Gallery, in which the artist duo searches for the most essential sculptural impact through minimal intervention. For Frames, Muller Van Severen always starts from a single plate, from which openings and depths arise through cutting and folding that not only provide space for functions, but also bridge the gap between reality and imagination. From the flat surface of a plate, a sculpture emerges that moves between abstraction and figuration. With Frames, Muller Van Severen creates a fictional world of images, in which alternative intrinsic meanings and possibilities are expressed, balancing between realism and surrealism.

This publication was made on the occasion of the fourth solo exhibition of Rinus Van de Velde at Tim Van Laere Gallery (7 september ? 21 october 2017). Van de Velde is one of the leading figures of the Belgian contemporary art scene. Over the past few years, he has built a strikingly coherent oeuvre, mainly consisting of monumental, narrative charcoal drawings. Although these drawings still play a prominent role in his work, Van de Velde evolves increasingly towards a ?total artist?, creating a tension between fiction and reality by the use of different media. This exhibition is Van de Velde?s first Belgian exhibition after his successful expo at the S.M.A.K. in 2016. Instead of relying on his previous success, Van de Velde wishes to walk new ways and to experiment with forms, compositions, styles and content. Here, Van de Velde creates his own universe by means of drawings, sculptures, decorative elements and ceramics. He was inspired by ?Prisoners of the Sun?, a volume of The Adventures of Tintin, the comics series by Belgian cartoonist Herg . The simple plot and the surrealist compositions of this adventure story serve as the basis for a fragmentary interpretation in which one of the artist?s alter egos, the abstract expressionist artist Robert Rino, is being kidnapped by a collector. While the artist is forced to produce work, his two assistants are trying to rescue him. Van de Velde?s work blends reality and fantasy, creating a complex world in which documentation and fiction, reproduction and reconstruction intrinsically tie together.

Re-itinerating the artist's projects from his early beginnings till today, this volume offers an exhaustive overview of 'the work of Tim Volckaert'. A hybrid between canonical cataloguing and artist-driven exhibiting. The work of Tim Volckaert translates a world vision where duality ? which characterises and dominates the history of Western thought ? is central. In his drawings, sculptures and actions the image of ?the landscape? is often the starting point. The landscape in the qualification of ?world space? that serves as a backdrop to comment on the struggle of man with his environment.

Art, Knowledge and Politics on the Eve of the Dutch Revolt Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Fall of the Rebel Angels is the first comprehensive book on one of the most cherished masterpieces of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. It argues that with his Fall of the Rebel Angels (1562) Pieter Bruegel (died 1569) turned a traditional devotional theme into an innovative commentary on his own time, and situates the painting within the early modern cultures of knowledge and collecting. More particularly, it exposes that many of the hybrid falling angels are carefully composed of naturalia and artificialia, as they were collected in art and curiosity cabinets of the time. Bruegel's much noted emulation of Jheronymus Bosch was thus only part of his wider interest in collecting, inspecting, and imitating the artistic and natural world around him. This prompts an examination of the world at the time that Bruegel painted the Fall of the Rebel Angels: locally, in the urban and courtly centers of Antwerp and Brussels on the eve of the Dutch revolt, and globally, as the discovery of the New World irreversibly transformed the European perception of art and nature. Painted as a tale of hubris and pride, Bruegel's masterpiece becomes a meditation on the potential and danger of man's pursuit of art, knowledge and politics, a universal theme that has lost nothing of its power today. The lavishly illustrated book is based on extensive research sponsored by the Inter University Attraction Pool project P7/26 'City and Society in the Low Countries (ca. 1200 - ca. 1850)' (Federal Science Policy, Belgium)'.
