‎Leo Gestel en Gustave De Smet, vluchtelingen ? zielsverwanten Gestel (1881-1941) en De Smet (1877-1943) kregen beiden de eerste schilderlessen van hun vader en kozen op jonge leeftijd voor een leven als vrij kunstenaar. Ze behoorden elk in eigen land al gauw tot de voorhoede, die het klassieke academische wilde afschudden en op zoek gingen naar stijlvernieuwingen. In Nederland waren dat Gestel, Sluijters en Mondriaan; in Vlaanderen De Smet met onder meer van den Berghe en Permeke. De Duitse inval in Belgi deed De Smet in 1914 naar Nederland vluchten waar hij Gestel ontmoette, die hem introduceerde in de Amsterdamse kunstwereld. De vernieuwingsdrift bracht beiden uiteindelijk tot het expressionisme, waarbij De Smet sterk be nvloed werd door de Nederlandse modernen. Begin jaren twintig keerde hij terug naar Belgi , waar hij met enkele medestanders de in Nederland opgedane ervaringen uitdroeg. Kort daarna zocht Gestel na een buitenechtelijk avontuur zijn toevlucht tot de Leiestreek en woonde hij in het Heilig Huizeken te Drongen. In die periode 1925-1927 kwam hij tot rust te midden van zijn Belgische vrienden en onderging hij op zijn beurt de invloed van het Vlaams expressionisme. Dit boek vertelt hoe beide kunstvrienden actief betrokken waren in de stormachtige vernieuwingen in de kunstwereld van begin twintigste eeuw, over het komen en gaan van kunstenaarsverenigingen in Vlaanderen en Nederland, en hoe hun werk evolueerde van het academische naar het expressionisme en zij daarbij ?onderweg? de invloed ondergingen van impressionisme, luminisme, pointillisme, kubisme en fauvisme. We zien hoe zij zich gesteund voelden in het land van de ander, we lezen in hun brieven over hun ups en downs, en we komen iets meer te weten over hun vriendschap en hun persoonlijkheid. Nederlanders en Vlamingen maken aan de hand van De Smet en Gestel kennis met de hevig in beroering zijnde kunstenaarswereld van begin twintigste eeuw en zullen meer zicht krijgen op wat zich aan de andere kant van de grens afspeelde. Dit boek is het sluitstuk van een drieluik, dat Hans Hagen over Leo Gestel heeft gemaakt. Na de plaatsing van een beeld van Gestel in de tuin van de Petruskerk in het centrum van Woerden (2015) volgde een jaar later het boek ?Leo Gestel, autobiografische notities?. Het bevat alle aantekeningen, die Gestel over zijn jeugd en zijn kunstenaarsbestaan maakte en waarvan hij hoopte dat ze na zijn overlijden zouden worden uitgegeven; het heeft 75 jaar geduurd voor het zover was (2016). Dit boek over Gestel en De Smet (2024) vormt het derde luik; we maken Gestel niet alleen als kunstenaar mee maar we zitten aan de hand van de vriendschap met De Smet de mens Gestel ook dichter op de huid. Hans Hagen (1944) publiceerde veel over zijn vakgebied Gezondheidseconomie. Na zijn pensioen wijdde hij zich onder andere aan de schilderkunst. Recente publicaties zijn ?Van haat tot erger?
