‎The exceedingly rare first edition of Captain Bernard Whittingham's notes on his voyage from Hong Kong aboard HMS Sibylle to the Russian settlements in Eastern Siberia. Here he recounts in detail the movements and actions of HMS Sybille, including the period of the capture of the Diana's crew (under the command Nikolai Baron Schilling) and their transfer in Hong Kong to other Royal Navy ships. Whittingham had volunteered to join an Allied squadron attempting 'to discover the progress of Russian aggrandisement in North-eastern Asia, and to ascertain how far the reports of her successful encroachment on the sea frontiers of China and Japan were true'. In the context of the Crimean War's Pacific theatre, he was also keen to see avenged the Royal Navy's defeat by the Russians at Petropavlovsk the previous year.""Between March and May, the British Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Bruce, assembled his fleet in preparation for a renewed attack on Petropavlovsk to be carried out in May. On March 26 (7), the frigate HMS Sybille (Commodore the Hon. Charles Elliot), steam corvette HMS Hornet and brig HMS Bittern left Hong Kong under instructions from Rear Admiral Sir James Stirling, Commander-in-Chief on the China station. By April 2 (14) the Screw Steam Ship HMS Encounter (Captain George William Douglas O'Callagan) and the Paddle Wheel Steam Sloop HMS Barracouta (Commander Frederick Henry Stirling), both vessels detached for the purpose from the East India station by Rear Admiral Stirling, were in position at the rendezvous position patrolling some distance off Petropavlovsk. ‎IMPORTANT TRAITÉ CONSACRÉ AUX CARACTÈRES CHINOIS. 7e édition (basée sur la 5e édition de 1932) de cet important traité consacré aux caractères chinois et à leur étymologie. Il paraît pour la première fois en 1900 comme le 12e volume des Rudiments de parler et de style chinois sous le titre Parler et style chinois. Rudiments par le P. Léon Wieger S. J. Douzienme volume. Caracteres (Ho kien fou : Imprimerie de la Mission catholique ; voir Bernard, Bibliographie méthodique des uvres du père Léon Wieger, n°29). En plus de tables et lexiques, l'ouvrage comprend 177 "leçons étymologiques", organisées par primitives (ou "minimum idéographique" [p. 14] non-décomposable) : le caractère "moderne" régulier y est reproduit en regard d'une ou plusieurs formes archaïques (sigillaires) et est accompagné d'une glose portant sur le sens du caractère et son étymologie. Ces leçons résument les travaux des philologues chinois, mais l'auteur, père jésuite, y intègre à l'occasion le témoignage d'"exégèse[s] mystique[s] et comique[s]" (p. 58) : ainsi le caractère de "bateau", comprenant les caractères de "huit" et de "bouche", aurait été analysé par certains comme "huit personnes, l'arche de Noé !..." Suit une section consacrée aux étymologies phonétiques, dans laquelle Wieger identifie 858 éléments phonétiques servant à composer des caractères complexes "idéophonogrammes". L'ouvrage comprend également un chapitre (incorporé à partir de l'édition de 1916) sur les écritures des bronzes anciens des trois premières dynasties ; celle-ci est richement illustrée de reproductions in-texte. Henri Michaux s'en serait inspiré pour son ouvrage Idéogrammes en Chine ; on y retrouve d'ailleurs, en rouge, l'une des illustrations de la p. 380. (Qiang Dong. "Acérer la plume, « lacérer le vide ». Une lecture d'Idéogrammes en Chine." In Littérature, n°115, 1999. pp. 55-69) Ordonné prêtre en 1887, l'alsacien Wieger part la même année pour la Chine et s'établit au sud de Pékin, dans l'actuel diocèse de Sienhsien. Il se consacre dans un premier temps à la médecine, mais son supérieur l'encourage dès 1893 à s'orienter vers l'études des langues locales. Auteur d'une histoire de la Chine Moderne comme d'une histoire de la Chine à travers les âges, sans compter ses études sur les écrits taoïstes, le père Wieger est souvent critiqué pour ses imprécisions et son approche missionnariste. Paul Demiéville écrit ainsi : "il poussait le zèle du néophyte jusqu'à l'étroitesse d'esprit et ne manquait pas une occasion d'exprimer son dédain ou son ironie à l'égard des « païens » chinois" (Choix d'études sinologiques, p. 88). Toutefois, son travail pionnier de linguiste, et particulièrement Caractères chinois, est globalement salué : Charles Le Blanc, notamment, estime l'ouvrage "irremplaçable" ("Les 3 phases de la sinologie", in Profession sinologue, 2007) On a conservé les paperolles insérées dans l'ouvrage par un précédent propriétaire : exercices de graphie, invitations à des concerts de musique chinoise ou des représentations de danse africaine, commentaire sur le texte (note datée du 3 août 1980). Notes à l'encre aux pp. 262-3. Ors en grande partie disparus au dos, habiles restaurations aux extrémités des mors en pied. ‎
