‎Enlarged fifth edition of this first major original English account of the Ottoman Turks, originally published in 1603. This work was repeatedly republished, copied, and extended, and had an unparalleled influence on numerous seventeenth century authors as a source of information and authority on the Ottoman Turks. Samuel Johnson praised him as the best of English historians, saying that ""in his history of the Turks [Knolles] has displayed all the excellencies that narration can admit."" (Johnson, Samuel (1969) [1751], ""The Rambler, Number 122). ""Compiled from a range of Byzantine and western histories, travelers' reports and letters, together with material from Leunclavius' recent Latin translation of a late 15th-century Ottoman chronicle, Knolles' was the first major work on the subject to appear in English, and was quickly recognized as a masterpiece of narrative synthesis. Subsequent editions in 1621, 1631, and 1638 included continuations by other writers. Knolles' literary style was admired by such writers as Johnson and Byron, and the work's reputation as an engrossing account survived well into the 19th century"" (ODNB). “Richard Knolles (late 1540s-1610) was born in Northamptonshire. When exactly Knolles began work on his most ambitious scholarly achievement The Historie of the Turkes is difficult to ascertain. The first folio edition appeared in 1603. James VI of Scotland became James I of England in March of that year following the death of Elizabeth I. Knolles took adavntage of the dynastic transition by dedicating the work to “the High and Mightie Prince James”. Knolles’ Historie is based heavily on a range of sixteenth-century printed chronicles and reports. It is, therefore, essentially a synthesis of other works, but a carefully crafted synthesis produced in English. Nothing of this scale and detail had appeared before, in English, on the Ottomans, and it would be another fifty years before a subsequent work in English would become the authority on the subject. Despite this fact, both Samuel Jonson and Lord Byron turned to Knolles centuries later, and both alluded to the richness of his prose style. William Shakespeare, moreover, likely used Knolles’ work (and possibly an earlier manuscript version) as a source for his Othello (ca. 1603-1604).” (University of Toronto, Victoria College, The Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies) ‎

‎Traduction manuscrite, rédigée d'une main très lisible, d'importants extraits d'écrits de l'allemand Joann Georg Kohl sur Saint-Pétersbourg et sur Moscou. Considéré comme l'un des fondateurs de la géographie théorique, Johann Georg Kohl (1808-1878) parcourut la Russie puis l'Europe avant d'élaborer, en s'appuyant sur l'exemple de Moscou, une théorie du développement des villes dites « sphériques ». Partant du principe que les villes sont établies dans le but de faciliter les échanges commerciaux, Kohl avance qu'elles sont façonnées par les transformations du marché et des transports. Aussi prédit-il l'apparition de gratte-ciels et de centres commerciaux souterrains. Les réflexions de Kohl sur ses voyages en Russie parurent en anglais sous le titre de Russia and the Russians en 1842 ; elles sont cependant encore inédites en France. Un premier cahier de 10 ff. manuscrits sur Moscou et leur remise au propre avec quelques corrections, inachevée, témoignent des étapes du travail effectué par l'éditeur/traducteur anonyme. Ce-dernier déclare, dans une préface, chercher à condenser « neuf volumes [formant] quatre ouvrages » de l'oeuvre du géographe allemand. Il pourrait s'agir ici des 4 ouvrages sur Saint Petersbourg publiés en allemand par Kohl en 1840, Der Petersburger Winter, Der Petersburger Fiaker, Rußland. Die Theebuden in St. Petersburg et Rußland. Das Petersburger Irrenhaus. Ouvrages qui auraient servi à l'élaboration de Russia and the Russians. Au final, ce serait près de 70% dudit ouvrage que l'on découvre ici pour la première fois en français. Il conviendrait bien sûr d'étudier plus avant la teneur et la composition du manuscrit et des différents ouvrages de l'auteur. L'intérêt de l'auteur pour l'urbanisme transparaît déjà dans ces notes de voyage : à rebours des écrivains de l'époque qui dépeignent Moscou comme l'une des villes les plus irrégulièrement bâties du monde, Kohl met en évidence la logique de sa structure. Si son approche est mathématique, l'écriture, elle, reflète son amour du pays : la Moskva « est une nymphe maigre et frêle » et les coupoles or et argent des bâtiments « forment une couronne au sommet du Kremlin ». Mais Kohl, qui contrairement à la plupart des voyageurs du XIXe siècle maîtrisait le russe, brille également par son analyse des coutumes et des moeurs. Ses écrits témoignent en effet d'une curiosité quasi-ethnographique : porté à s'intéresser à toutes les classes sociales, des dames de la cour au « peuple noir » en passant par les domestiques, l'auteur rend compte de sujets aussi variés que l'architecture, la cuisine, la mode, l'industrie, le culte, ou encore les moyens de transport. Quelques rares déchirures marginales. ‎
