Avocat, deux fois bâtonnier de Lyon, député du Rhône, éphémère ministre de la justice, Paul Sauzet, président de la Chambre, protègera et facilitera la fuite de la famille de Louis-Philippe lors de la Révolution de 1848. Jacques Heyman de Ricqlès est le second fils de Samuel Heyman, juif originaire d'Amsterdam qui vint s'installer à Lyon en 1824 comme négociant en soierie. Il fut Président de la Communauté Juive de Lyon. En 1833, lors de sa demande de naturalisation, est ajouté le nom de Ricqlès à Heyman ; celui-ci, passioné de botanique, mettra au point ce breuvage à base de menthe distillée qui donnera la célèbre marque "Ricqlès". Couverture un peu poussiéreuse, petits manques de papier en marge extérieure, loin du texte, bon exemplaire tout de même. ‎

‎Summary Hugh Eterianus (1110/1120-1182) was one of the most influential theologians of the 12th century. He was born in Pisa and then moved to Byzantium, where he worked at the court of Manuel Comnenus. He was greatly appreciated for his deep knowledge of both Latin and Greek as well as for his expertise in theology and doctrinal controversies. He wrote many learned works on the relationship between Eastern and Western churches. His main oeuvre is De sancto et immortali Deo, composed around 1176-1177, at the culminating point of the Filioque controversy. In this treatise, Hugh supported the Latin side, arguing in favour the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father and the Son. Despite his importance both as a historical figure in twelfth-century Constantinople and as a theologian, Hugh Eterianus and his output have remained almost unknown and his works never properly edited. In the wake of Antoine Dondaine's seminal contributions, Pietro Podolak and Anna Zago have now produced a new critical edition of Hugh's main treatise, De sancto et immortali Deo, based on a complete and systematic analysis of the manuscript tradition. The edition also includes four epistles transmitted with the treatise, and the editio princeps of the so called Compendiosa expositio, an anonymous commentary on Hugh's work written by a contemporary. In an appendix, readers will also find the collection of the few extant fragments of the Greek version of the main treatise.‎

‎Summary In 1239 the Christian convert Nicholas Donin submitted thirty-five articles to Pope Gregory IX that decried the indecency, blasphemy, and heresy in the Talmud. As a result, the pope triggered a campaign across Europe that gave rise to a trial of the Talmud in Paris in 1240. The Latin translation of the Talmud - namely, the 1245 Extractiones de Talmud and later versions such as the Excerptum de Talmud - emerged from these events. This volume offers the first critical edition, along with an English translation, of the Excerptum de Talmud. Drawing on the substantial translation of the Babylonian Talmud known as the Extractiones de Talmud (Paris, 1245), the Excerptum provided a selection of passages from the Talmud which its compiler organized according to controversial topics. This book consists of two principal parts. The first contains a study of the Excerptum, its textual source (the Extractiones de Talmud), and an overview of the historical background which prompted this translation. The second part consists of an edition and translation of the text, as well as an edition of the passages from the Extractiones which served as the basis for the Excerptum. These texts mark a significant chapter in Christian anti-Jewish disputations and Latin polemical works in the Middle Ages. ‎Summary How did the least educated rows of the clergy get in touch with basic and more subtle religious teachings? Access to literacy was not the rule in the Early Middle Ages, but rather the exception. However, even the lowest rows of the Church were expected to be able to take care of their parishes. Therefore, the clergy was expected to be provided a certain knowledge. Oral transmission might have played the most important role in the formation of the lowest clergy. Still, several compositions have survived which might have also served this aim. These are rather simple, hardly original texts with friendly displays and oversimplified approaches to central matters of the Christian faith. Most of such compositions do not reach the highest standards of the time - nor do they attempt to do so. Yet, they are not mere personal notes for private use. They were surely meant to be circulated and to last - as they apparently did. This volume collects some of these texts, which appear to be related with one another in different ways. The collection, however, is not and could not be intended to be complete.‎
