‎Nach dem Bildersturm des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden Kirchenräume in Antwerpen und der niederländischen Republik wieder neu ausgestattet. Die Studie beleuchtet, wie in Altargemälden von Abraham Bloemaert, Marten de Vos und Otto van Veen die sozio-konfessionelle Situation der Katholiken diskutiert wird. In Antwerpen hatten die Katholiken lange mit den Protestanten um die Vormacht gerungen, bis der Katholizismus dort 1585 zur einzig anerkannten Konfession wurde. In der niederländischen Republik hingegen waren die Katholiken nach 1581 lediglich toleriert und konnten nur in ihren Häusern Versammlungsorte und Kirchenräume einrichten. Wie spiegeln sich diese theologisch-sozialen Konflikte in den Altargemälden wider, die nach dem reformatorischen Bildersturm entstanden? Esther Meier untersucht die Altarretabel auf ihre sozio-konfessionellen Aussagen hin und arbeitet heraus, wie sich die gesellschaftliche Stellung der Katholiken in den Bildern ausdrückt.‎

‎Op zijn sterfbed nam de Leidse jurist Johannes Thysius een beslissing die hem onsterfelijk zou maken. Hij liet een testament opstellen waarmee hij zijn belangrijkste bezit, een bibliotheek met enkele duizenden boeken, naliet aan de wetenschap. Thysius had kosten noch moeite gespaard met het verzamelen van boeken over alle mogelijke onderwerpen van studie, en meende dat zijn overlijden geen einde mocht maken aan dit levenswerk. Enkele jaren na zijn dood kon op het Rapenburg de Bibliotheca Thysiana worden geopend, de eerste door een prive?verzamelaar gestichte publieke bibliotheek in de Nederlanden. In Een kamer gevuld met de mooiste boeken beschrijft Esther Mourits de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de collectie. Johannes Thysius is een ongrijpbare figuur: voortdurend bezig met boeken, maar lezen of studeren deed hij nauwelijks. Hij was gesteld op status en rijkdom en hield er een comfortabele levensstijl op na, maar gebruikte zijn geld vooral om boeken te verzamelen en daarmee uiteindelijk de studie van anderen te faciliteren. Het resultaat van Thysius? werk is een goedgesorteerde bibliotheek, representatief voor zijn tijd en met verrassend veel kennis en kunde samengesteld. ‎

‎Summary Significant innovations in portraiture occurred during the transitional period from the end of the sixteenth-century to the early seventeenth-century in Rome. Portraits by Annibale Carracci, Valentin de Boulogne, Anthony van Dyck, Simon Vouet and Gianlorenzo Bernini display a loosening of formality and a trend towards movement. These artists produced a portrait type that was more inclusive of the viewer, more communicative, more revealing of a private face.
