Een bijkomend voordeel was dat zulke geschriften - die vaak een belangrijke rol ervulden in de eredienst - extra sier en aanzien kregen. Ook kerkboekjes op zakformaat werden in de zeventiende tot eind negentiende eeuw verfraaid met zilveren en gouden sloten, soms gecompleteerd met hoekstukken en andere garnituur.
