‎Summary The rich literary production of Gaza in the fifth and sixth centuries AD has received quite some attention in recent scholarship. Yet, the figure and work of Procopius the Sophist, as author of catenae, compiler, and epitomist of patristic exegesis, have remained relatively unknown and under-explored. This collection of essays delves deeply into Procopius' exegetical work. At the outset, a strong case is made that one should distinguish between the famous orator of Gaza and "the Christian sophist" Procopius. A first large section of the book deals with the Genesis Epitome that is studied from three different angles: the limited and as a rule critical use of Origen and his tradition; the importance given to Theodore of Mopsuestia's exegesis of Gen 1-3; and the relations between Procopius' Epitome and John Philoponus' De opificio mundi. The section on the Exodus Epitome studies the specificity of Procopius' work in comparison to the Catena on Exodus, the way the material is organised, and the literary genre of the work. The volume further contains contributions on the connections between the Scholia on Kings attributed to Procopius, the type B catena, and the so-called "Catena Lipsiensis"; the relations between Procopius' Catena on Proverbs and other catenae on this book; the sources of the Isaiah Epitome that show a diligent and able compiler at work; and the comparison between the characteristic features of Procopius' Epitomes and those of the Catena III on Obadiah. As a whole, it offers a wide perspective and significantly advances research on, and our knowledge of, Procopius the Christian sophist, a still somewhat mysterious early Byzantine author and scholar. His writings played a major part in the re-discovery of Dionysius in the thirteenth century, and in the general development of western mysticism, for example through his teaching on the 'spark of synderesis'. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, 393 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503049915.‎

‎The Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis is written by Andreas Agnellus in the early ninth century. The text consists of introductory verses and a prologue, followed by a series of Lives of the forty-six bishops of Ravenna from the founding of the church of Ravenna by St. Apolenaris, supposedly a disciple of St. Peter, to Agnellus' own day. The introduction includes the following sections: 'I. Background'; 'II. The Text and its Sources', and 'III. Manuscripts, History of the Text, and Editions'. There are also two appendices: 'Animadversiones in seriem archiepiscoporum ecclesiae Ravennatis' and 'Descriptio nominum ecclesiarum et locorum in LPR laudatorum'. The Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis is an essential source for the study of Italian history from the fourth to the ninth centuries. Agnellus seems to have been a well-born priest in the church of Ravenna, and his work is strongly colored by his personal experiences. He wrote it to demonstrate two strongly-held opinions. One of these was the apostolicity and independence of the Ravennate archbishopric; the other was the moral decline of recent bishops, and their erosion of clerical rights. Using the framework of a series of biographies of the bishops of his see, he presents his highly idiosyncratic view of history. The work is full of anecdotes, miracle stories, and mini-sermons, as well as information about historical events and artistic and architectural patronage, all of which have made it an invaluable source to scholars who study early medieval Italy. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1996 Hardback, XXXVI+180 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503045719.‎

‎The Contra fatalitatis errorem of Bartholomew of Exeter was written c. 1180-82 and is one of the bishop's last works (he died in 1184). It survives in three manuscripts, though there is evidence that other copies have been lost. The work is dedicated to Bartolomew's friend and colleague Baldwin, who at the time was bishop of Worcester and was undertaken at Baldwin's suggestion. The purpose of the work is twofold: firstly, to launch a determined attack on the belief in and practice of astrology and prediction, which was clearly wide-spread in twelfth-century England; and secondly to attempt to reconcile human free-will with divine predestination. Bartholomew bases his work primarily on Basil the Great (in the Latin translation of Eusthatius), Ambrose of Milan, Boethius, Anselm of Canterbury, and, above all, Augustine, and his careful and logical discussion is the longest and most comprehensive attempt at resolving the problem of free-will and predestination to come from the twelfth century. It is a monument of pre-scholastic scholasticism, and has been too long ignored by students of medieval theology and philosophy. Languages: Latin.‎
