Summary As a prehistory to the Nativity accounts of the gospels of Matthew and Luke the Protevangelium of James, dated to the second half of the second century, aimed to fill in alleged gaps in the canonical accounts of Jesus' and his mother's ancestry and births. Thus, it describes the birth of Mary, the mother of Christ, the Annunciation, the Nativity and the death of Zachariah, the high priest and father of John the Baptist. The edition of the original Greek text has an English version on its facing pages. There are also editorial notes to enable all interested parties to benefit from reading this important and influential text. The commentary pays particular attention to the early liturgical use of the Protevangelium and to artistic representations of the scenes it describes as these were the main means by which this highly influential text was transmitted throughout the known world. It also questions the usually accepted genre and purpose of the text and suggests that its author may have had a satirical intention or have intended it as an early Christian novelette, using scriptural scenes and themes as his inspiration. Maybe we have approached the Protevangelium of James with solemn faces and have been prepared to carry out serious theological investigations, whereas the many inconsistencies and glaring contradictions so obvious as to be ridiculous might suggest the author's intentions were not quite so grave or weighty.

Le Gracial d'Adgar est la premiere oeuvre representative du genre des miracles de Notre-Dame en francais. Ecrite en anglo-normand, vers 1165, elle temoigne de l'influence de l'Angleterre dans le developpement du culte marial et l'eclosion de la litterature francaise. Ce genre litteraire connaitra un succes considerable dans toute l'Europe. Il s'agit de montrer que si Adgar condamne la litterature profane pour ses mensonges et son immoralite, il sait tout de meme en retirer une lecon de ? sagesse et de courtoisie? . Son oeuvre s'adresse a un public ? frivole? , mais exigeant. Il faut que cette litterature pieuse puisse rivaliser, par son agrement, avec la litterature courtoise de son temps et depasser les Vies de saints par son homogeneite et sa variete. Le texte latin est traduit en francais moderne, afin que le lecteur puisse constater les enjeux d'une impossible fidelite. Quelques miracles d'Adgar sont enfin compares a ceux de ses confreres romans, notamment le plus brillant d'entre eux, Gautier de Coinci.

This first supplement to my An Annotated Bibliography on Ibn Sina (1979-1989), published in 1991, informs the reader about all new studies on Ibn Sina (Avicenna) published in the period 1990-1994, and also offers corrigenda and addenda to the former bibliography. Also in the supplement, attention is paid to Western, and to non-Western publications. Moreover, it has been tried to be even more exhaustive by including publications, which have not Ibn Sina (Avincenna) in the title, but which nevertheless are offering important and innovative information about his life or thought. First, an overview is given of the new editions and/or translations of Ibn Sina's works, which are once more identified according to the classic bibliographies of G.C. Anawati and M.Mehdavi. Hereafter, separate chapters are dedicated to studies of a biographical and a bibliographical nature. No less than ten chapters are devoted to materials dealing with Ibn Sina's philosophical thought (e.g., logic, psychology, metaphysics, religious thought, sources, influences both in the East and the West). Finally, materials dealing with in two separate chapters. It has to be noted that almost all publications are annotated with a summary of their most original points and a short critical evaluation. An index, which includes the names of all authors, ancient, medieval and contemporary, has been added. In sum, this work aims at providing a clear, concise and comprehensive work- instrument for all future Avicenna research. It is not only of great interest for all scholars working in Arabic-Islamic philosophy, science and medicine, but also for historians of philosophy and mediaevalists. Le Cantique des cantiques a ete, durant toute l'Antiquite chretienne, le livre de l'Ancien Testament le plus lu apres le Psautier. Dans le domaine grec, il a donne lieu a bon nombre de commentaires, a partir desquels les chaines exegetiques ont ete constituees. Certaines exegeses du Cantique ne sont aujourd'hui accessibles qu'a travers les chaines : c'est le cas pour celles d'Apollinaire de Laodicee et de Cyrille d'Alexandrie. La chaine la plus interessante est l'Epitome de Procope de Gaza, qui contient 390 citations empruntees a une dizaine d'auteurs (entre le 3e et le 5e siecle). Il s'agit d'un instrument de travail original, qui se propose de deployer les virtualites de sens du texte biblique, en fournissant au lecteur un echantillonnage diversifie d'interpretations. L'Epitome sur le Cantique vient d'etre edite dans le Corpus christianorum (Series Graeca, 67). L'editeur montre ici comment le Cantique est interprete a travers l'Epitome, verset apres verset; il explicite le projet du cateniste et etudie sa methode de travail; il analyse les exegeses d'Apollinaire et de Cyrille, qui ne sont pas transmises en dehors de l'Epitome. Il etend l'enquete a d'autres chaines sur le Cantique en montrant, a partir d'une analyse precise des prologues, comment chacune introduit a la lecture du Cantique. Languages : French, Greek.

Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most remarkable of medieval writers. Living to almost one hundred years of age, Tolomeo bore witness to some of the most important events of the period. He studied and travelled with Thomas Aquinas and was elected Dominican prior in Lucca and Florence. He attended the saintly Pope Celestine V during Celestine's doomed reign, lived at the papal court in Avignon, served in the households of two cardinals, and associated with the infamous Pope John XXII. At the age of eighty, Tolomeo was appointed bishop of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon, where his superior, the Patriarch of Grado, subsequently excommunicated and jailed him. Tolomeo is known today for his major contribution to republican political thought, most notably his continuation of Thomas Aquinas's only political treatise. However, he also wrote treatises on imperial and ecclesiastical power, a commentary on the six days of creation, a massive Church history, and a European history from 1063 onward. Drawn from all known surviving sources, The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's life. It discusses each of his works, and addresses numerous problems of authorship and dating. Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most important political theorists and historians of the Middle Ages. He was central to developing a theory for the practices of Northern Italian republicanism and was hostile to kingship, portraying it as despotic and inappropriate for virtuous and freedom-loving people. He was the first writer to compare Aristotle's examples of Greek mixed constitutions - Sparta, Crete, and Carthage - with the Roman Republic, the ancient Hebrew polity, the Church, and medieval communes, yet he remained a staunch defender of the absolute secular and spiritual monarchy of the pope. Blythe explores various tensions in Tolomeo's work that are often overlooked in scholarly treatments of him, and which derive from cultural preconceptions and the diverse influences on him: Aristotle, Augustine, apologists for papal power, his life in the Dominican Order, his educational experience with Thomas Aquinas, and his social position as a member of Northern Italy's ruling class. These factors exerted contradictory influences on Tolomeo and led him to a sometimes unsuccessful intellectual struggle for consistency. This book is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's thought and it gives full consideration not only to the political writings for which he is most known, but also to his historical and exegetical works. In Grosseteste we have on our hands a figure, not only of great complexity in himself, but of even greater complexity in the kind of evidence which we are required to use.
