m Gegensatz zur griechisch- und lateinischsprachigen Christenheit des Westens, verwendeten die syrischen Christen bis ins 5. Jahrhundert eine Harmonie der vier Evangelien als Hauptschrift des Neuen Testamentes, das sogenannte 'Diatessaron'. Da nach heutigem Wissensstand kein syrisches Manuskript dieser Evangelienharmonie erhalten ist, kommt dem in der zweiten Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts entdeckten und Ephraem dem Syrer (ca. 306-373) zugeschriebenen syrischen Diatessaronkommentar eine wichtige Rolle bei der Erforschung der fruhen syrischen Textgestalt der Evangelien zu - und das, obwohl die Zuweisung zu Ephraem in der Forschung umstritten und das Werk zum Teil nur in armenischer Ubersetzung erhalten ist. Durch die Ubertragung der derzeit bekannten syrischen Fassung des Kommentars stellen die 'Fontes Christiani' diesen fur Exegeten wie Historiker gleichermassen bedeutsamen Text einem breiteren Publikum vor.
