‎Summary In this volume, the research of J zef Dobosz, one of Poland's leading historians of the Middle Ages, is made accessible in English for the first time. It brings together nineteen studies focused on the role of the Church, the Cistercian Order, and other religious institutions in the history of the Piast realm from which Poland emerged. The introduction offers a broad outline of the first two centuries of the rule of the Piast dynasty after the Baptism of Poland in 966 until the fragmentation of the Piast patrimony during the twelfth century. The subsequent essays examine the circumstances of the foundation of Poland's leading Cistercian monasteries in Sulej w, J?drzej w, W?chock, Owi?ska, and ?ekno. The author analyses the means of their establishment, evaluates the existing sources, and places these within the context of the Piast dynasty's economic, political, and social policies. The studies offer an in-depth analysis of the motivations of the leading dynasts, magnates, and prelates in supporting the mission of the Church in Poland and enabling further embedding of Christianity across all strata of the society. ‎Cette collection de lettres envoyées par les missionnaires jésuites d'Orient, d'Amérique et d'Asie fut d'une importance immense pour l'ouverture de l'Europe aux autres cultures. En particulier, les volumes sur la Chine créèrent un véritable engouement en Occident, les lettres proposent de véritables reportages sur la Chine, son mode de gouvernement, les particularités de sa langue, ses mœurs et coutumes et fut à l'origine de la première sinologie européenne ainsi que de la mode des chinoiseries. Elle contient la carte immensément importante de la Californie par Eusebio Francisco Kino (1645-1711), Kino a entrepris de déterminer si la Californie était une île (comme on le pensait généralement à l'époque) ou une péninsule. Il a envoyé sa carte manuscrite et son traité de 1701 en Espagne au savant jésuite, scientifique et écrivain, Bartolomé Alcázar. Alcázar a redessiné la carte originale de Kino et l'a soumise à Charles Inselin, graveur français. Les jésuites ont publié la carte pour la première fois en 1705, et la carte est apparue sous forme imprimée à plusieurs reprises en Europe pendant des décennies. Kino croyait que ses preuves étaient suffisantes pour prouver hors de tout doute que la Californie était une péninsule, mais le mythe de la « Californie en tant qu'île » a persisté jusqu'au siècle suivant. 14 volumes of jesuit’s letters, Vol 1 to 3 middle est, 4 and 5 America, 6 to 8 India, 9 to 13 China, 14 India and China. ‎Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), médecin et botaniste, fut médecin de la concession néerlandaise de Deshima de 1690 à 1692, il eut l’opportunité d'observer la vie, la culture et l'histoire naturelle japonaises. Il a également participé à deux voyages de Deshima à Jedo (Tokyo) et a soigneusement documenté ses observations. Tout cela s’est produit à une époque où le Japon était isolé du monde occidental. A son retour en Allemagne en 1693, il publia un récit de ses voyages sous le titre d'Amoenitates Exoticae. Cependant, ses nombreux manuscrits concernant le Japon sont restés inédits, ceux-ci furent obtenus par Sir Hans Sloane qui les fit traduire en anglais par J.G. Scheuchzer. Jusqu'au Récit de l'expédition Perry au Japon publié en 1856-1857, ces ouvrages dérivés des manuscrits de Kaempfer constituaient la principale source d'informations sur le Japon dans le monde occidental.
