‎Ni mouvement ni courant esthetique, l'Art deco est un etat d'esprit, l'expression d'une volonte momentanee de definir le style d'une epoque qui marque la France des annees 1920. Prefigurant le futur, il apparait comme le symptome d'une modernite en mouvement, attache en particulier aux arts decoratifs et industriels. Apparaissant a la suite des avancees plastiques du debut du siecle - le cubisme principalement -, auxquelles il doit beaucoup, et a l'instar des deux decennies qui le precedent, l'Art deco valorise le changement, tout en s'affirmant contre la modernite et les " modernistes ", ainsi denommes par les contemporains, et en particulier contre le dogmatisme, la normalisation, le positionnement ideologique. Son merite essentiel sera d'avoir suscite une prodigieuse fecondite de la creation dans les domaines des arts visuels, avec une ampleur universelle. Ce livre ne pretend pas etre un ouvrage theorique sur l'Art deco. II tient surtout a rendre hommage aux jeunes antiquaires qui, a l'oree des annees 1970, l'ont redecouvert, soutenu et defendu avec une determination formidable, en l'imposant sur le marche de l'antiquite. Nous regarderons ces oeuvres pour leur valeur esthetique, qui fut si difficile a imposer aux yeux des collectionneurs et des simples amateurs.
