‎Maria Anna Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulos, better known among her artists name Maria Callas : New York 2 december 1923- 16 september 1977, This American-Greek soprano especially excelled in the major roles of nineteenth-century Italian operas, especially those of Vincenzo Bellini and Giuseppe Verdi. The strength of Callas' voice lies in the dramatic presentation; she sang her parts in an extremely compelling manner and with full conviction, the impeccability of the technique clearly taking second place to the emotional impact on the listener. Her qualities were also seen in the combination of a very good stage actress and an extraordinary opera singer. Her singing technique was especially excellent in her prime, although singing teachers have always had certain points of criticism. Callas' blending of the professional with the personal, as emphatically promoted by her and her record company EMI to international news media, contributed to her enormous success. In addition, Maria Callas' voice had a rather unique timbre, making her immediately recognizable in every recording. Callas happened a few times what is a nightmare for every opera singer, namely having to cut short a performance for physical reasons. The first time this took place on January 2, 1952 in Rome. ‎VICTOR HORTA (1861-1947)fut un des pionniers du renouvellement qui vit le jour vers 1900 en reaction contre l'architecture classique et monumentale des siecles precedents. Faisant usage des materiaux contemporains, tels le verre et le metal, introduisant l'air et la lumiere dans les batiments et privilegiant l'asymetrie, Horta invente un langage formel original. Il cree des maisons confortables et belles a l'eclairage sophistique. Ce livre fait decouvrir le parcours de Horta, des interventions prudentes du debut au style contenu et geometrique des dernieres realisations, en passant par l'exuberance lineaire a laquelle on l'associe generalement. C'est dans son pavillon pour Les Passions humaines de Jef Lambeaux (1889-1906, parc du Cinquantenaire, Bruxelles) que le jeune architecte se distancie pour la premiere fois, tres modestement, des formes classiques. Les themes sur lesquels Horta fonde ses creations trouvent leur plus belle expression dans la maison Tassel (1893), qui marque l'avenement de l'Art nouveau. ‎ Het standaardwerk over Victor Horta, over de vernieuwing die hij rond 1900 in de classicistische bouwstijl wist te brengen en uit te werken tot het hoogtepunt van de art nouveau. Een prachtig boek over een groot architect. De Europalia expositie in Brussel is dit jaar gewijd aan Victor Horta, wiens Paleis voor Schone Kunsten uit 1928 in oorspronkelijke staat werd hersteld. De uitgave bij die tentoonstelling gaat vooral over dat gebouw in een late art d co en belicht daarmee een onbekend aspect van de art nouveau architect. Zijn ontwikkeling van decorateur in art nouveau tot ruimtelijk bouwmeester komt in enkele teksten wel tot uiting, maar op een droge, weinig inspirerende manier. De fraaie illustraties in kleur en zwart-wit doen de kunst van Horta meer recht. De artikelen van diverse auteurs zijn slecht geco rdineerd: veel herhalingen van citaten. Als argument om Horta ook te zien als een belangrijk art d co en classicistisch architect is de publicatie terecht, maar dan wel meer op de specialist dan op de expositiebezoekers gericht. Over Horta en art nouveau is veel gepubliceerd; over het late werk van Horta (1861-1947) vindt men hier grondige, op Brussel ge rienteerde informatie. De lijst van ge xposeerde werken is een bijlage.
