This work was originally published as a paper in the Journal of the North-China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (New Series, Vol. XV) for the year 1880. The separate book edition followed in 1881.rnEmil Bretschneider was a Baltic German physician attached to the Russian legation in Beijing. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on physically collecting plants, Bretschneider was fascinated by sinology (the study of Chinese texts).rnHe noticed that Western botanists had difficulty identifying plants mentioned in ancient Chinese medical and agricultural texts. This 1881 edition was his first large-scale attempt to bridge that gap.rnContents of the 1881 editionrnThe publication is not so much a flora in the modern sense (a list of plants in an area) as a bibliographical and historical overview. It contains:rnAnalyses of the Pên-ts'ao (Materia Medica): Bretschneider discusses the most important Chinese herbal books, in particular Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu.rnIdentification: He attempted to link the Chinese names of plants to their scientific Latin names.rnClassical Literature: He examined plant references in the Shijing (Book of Songs) and other ancient Chinese classics.rnThe Publisher: American Presbyterian Mission PressrnThe choice of the American Presbyterian Mission Press in Shanghai was logical for the time. This was the most advanced printing press in China in the 19th century.rnThey had the necessary typefaces for both Latin script and Chinese characters, which was essential for Bretschneider's work.rn

Section I: Silver (The Monetary Backbone)rnSycees & Taels: Provides minute detail on silver ingots (sycees) and the tael, which served as both a weight and a unit of account. It analyzes various regional taels (like the Haikwan and Shanghai taels) and their specific exchange complexities.rnForeign & Domestic Dollars: Technical specifications of silver coins, including the Mexican Peso and early Chinese Republican dollars, detailing their exact weight, silver fineness, and "assay" (purity tests).rnSection II: Gold (The Trading Commodity)rnGold Bar Market: A detailed account of the Shanghai Gold Bar Market, where gold was treated primarily as a commodity for international settlement rather than a circulating currency.rnGold Standard Efforts: Documents the technical and political hurdles that prevented China from successfully transitioning to a true gold standard during the early 20th century.rnSection III: Copper (The People's Currency)rnMinting & Seigniorage: Examines the overproduction of copper "cash" and cents, the technical output of provincial mints, and how the resulting inflation affected the general population. rn

London, Luzac & Company, 1895. Reprinted by Cheng Wen Publishing Company, Taipei, 1968. 1 volume in 12, 575pp + XIII., green cloth in good condition.
This volume can be divided into three parts. Initially, Eitel traces the history of Sino-British relations under the domination of the East India Company from 1625 to 1834. The second portion traces the course of British public opinion and government policy toward China following the failure of Lord Napiers mission to Canton in 1834. During this period public sentiment grew for the establishment of a British colony in China. The final portion deals with the pre-British history of Hong Kong, the cession of Hong Kong to British in 1841, and the administrative history of the colony. The administrative history is a term by term account of the affairs of Hong Kong under each governor that served there between 1841 and 1882. This volume contains considerable data on the politics, finances, social problems, trade and commerce of Hong Kong.
