Les Jésuites effectuaient des travaux scientifiques de météorologie, de physique du globe (observations magnétiques et sismologiques), de géographie, d'astronomie et de physique générale. Ils poursuivaient ainsi l'oeuvre scientifique entreprise par leurs illustres devanciers du seizième et dix-septième siecle, les Ricci, les Schall, les Verbiets, ces "Présidents du Tribunal des Mathématiques" dont les noms sont restés dans l'Histoire.
