‎L'auteur était Médecin-major de 1ère classe aux ambulances. Il a participé à la Campagne de Chine (1859-1860). Il livre, à travers ses lettres, ses impressions et réflexions sur son voyage et sur la culture chinoise. Il s'agit d'un tiré à part de la Gazette médicale de Paris Les 15 premiers chapitres sont consacrés au voyage vers la Chine en passant par les Canaries, Le Cap et l'Océan Indien. Les dix derniers chapitres se concentrent sur la Chine, sous les aspects géographique, historique, scientifique, médical. Les derniers chapitres ont trait à la médecine chinoise et aux préceptes d'hygiène.‎
