Publié pour la première fois en 1917, ce livre est considéré comme une uvre monumentale pour l'étude de la pensée chinoise. Wieger y retrace l'évolution spirituelle de la Chine, de ses origines jusqu'à l'époque moderne, en s'appuyant sur de nombreuses traductions de textes originaux. Léon Wieger (1856-1933) était un missionnaire jésuite, médecin et sinologue français. Il est reconnu comme l'un des pionniers de la sinologie moderne pour l'ampleur monumentale de ses travaux sur la langue, l'histoire et la pensée chinoises.‎
