This book investigates whether and to what extent foreign language textbooks can contribute to promoting adolescent pupils' acquisition of intercultural communicative competence. It gives a full scientific account of a research project carried out amongst Flemish learners of German. The focus of the research was on the relationships between the culture teaching approaches adopted in textbooks and the pupils' learning of culture. Although the sub-title refers to a particular group of pupils learning a particular language, the study has more general bearing and constitutes a substantial contribution to the literature, and in particular empirical research, on the development of intercultural competence in and through foreign language education. The composition of the volume reflects the affective, cognitive and contact dimensions of the culture learning process. It also gives space to the theoretical platform on which the research was built, and to the research methodology adopted. Chapter 1 sets out to contextualise and define the research topic. It clarifies the study's position within the field of culture-and-language learning-and-teaching theory, practice and research. It also situates the investigation into the specific context of teaching and learning foreign languages-and-cultures in Flanders. In chapter 2 the theoretical framework informing the study is developed. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the techniques of data collection and analysis employed, of the kinds of data collected, and of the chronology of data collection. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 provide an interpretative description and analysis of the investigation's key concepts. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the pupils' culture learning processes and analyse relationships between attitude, contact and perception data. In chapter 6 the culture teaching approaches adopted in the investigated textbook series are described and evaluated with regard to their potential for promoting the pupils' learning of culture. Chapter 7, finally, provides a summary overview of the study's main findings and presents the main conclusions that can be drawn from the evidence presented in earlier chapters. It estimates the value of the study's research methodology and theoretical framework. It also reflects on how the research findings can find application and implementation. ‎

‎First French edition (the German paper issued simutaneously in Gilbert's Annalen) of this groundbreaking paper claiming to be the first to announce the isolation of pure morphine from opium. This process marks an importent step in the beginnings of alkaloid chemistry, and the isolation of morphine is the first isolation of an alkali of vegetable origin. In his paper Sertuerner coined the word ""morphine"" after Morpheus (the Greek God of sleep).The isolation of morphine from opium, the first isolation of a natural product, was a seminal event in the development of pharmacology as an independent discipline. The purification kick-started natural product chemistry and quickly led to the isolation of a host of other alkaloids. Within a few years, in 1827, Heinrich Emanuel Merck of Darmstadt began selling morphine, resulting in the development of the eponymous company. Sertürner reported his first observations on Opium in 1805, which was mainly concerned with the constituent of meconic acid, but ""it was only in 1817...(in the paper offered) that he unequivocally reported the isolation of pure morphine. He prepared it by extracting opium with hot water and precipitating morphine with ammonia. he obtained colorless crystals, poorly soluble in water, but soluble in acids and alcohol. In order to establish that his crystals carried the pharmacological activity of raw opium, Sertuerner tested them on himself and three boys, ""none older than seventeen."". It was a near-catastrophe."" (Ryan J. Huxtable a. K.W. Schwarz).DEROSNE (1803) made claim of priority in the discovery of opium, but he only ""prepared a crude extract of opium with alcohol and water, and obtained by potassium carbonate preciipitation, what he called ""sel de Derosne"". Derosne's alkaloidal fraction lacked narcotic properties, and was probably largely narcotine (also known as noscapine), perhaps with meconic acid, both abundant in opium."" ‎Jewish martyrdom in the Middle Ages is a most intriguing social, cultural, and religious phenomenon. It was stimulated by ancient Jewish myths, and at the same time it was influenced by the Christian environment in which the Jews lived and operated. The result was a unique and unprecedented event in which the Jews did not simply refuse to convert to Christianity; they were ready to kill themselves and their children so they would not be forced to convert. The Ways of Jewish Martyrdom discusses the phenomenon of Jewish Martyrdom in medieval Germany, northern France, and England from the time of the First Crusade (1096) until the mid-fourteenth century (that is, the time of the ?Black Death?), in light of modern research and with ample use of hitherto-neglected primary sources. In order to understand the unique phenomenon of Jewish martyrdom, the various Jewish and Christian antecedents that might have influenced the notion of Jewish martyrdom in the Middle Ages need analysis. The texts on which the analysis is based are various, ranging from chronicles through memorial books to liturgical materials and Piyyut. The last part of the book reviews the development of this phenomenon after the fourteenth century and delineates the essential changes and transformations therein at the dawn of the early modern period and beyond.‎

‎Dat zo'n keur aan Vlaamse meesters in een collectie zit, is op zich al bijzonder. Dat die collectie op reis gaat, mag nog uitzonderlijker heten. De indrukwekkende Vlaamse afdeling van de Royal Collection verliet nog nooit eerder bijna in zijn geheel de Britse eilanden. De selectie van een vijftigtal schilderijen biedt een uitgelezen kans om het gezamenlijke topniveau van de kunstenaars van de lage landen in te schatten. De schilderijen werden tussen de 15de en de 17de eeuw gemaakt, in aanvankelijk voorspoedige maar, na de opstand tegen de Spanjaarden, ook woelige tijden. Tegen 1550 was Vlaanderen een van de rijkste streken ter wereld. Antwerpen zoog als het wereldcentrum van welvaart kunstenaars en verzamelaars, intellectuelen en burgers naar zich toe. De schilders haalden the rich and the famous voor hun ezel, en die betaalden graag voor de luisterrijke Vlaamse portretten vol realistische details. De meesters vonden de oude verhalen van bijbel en mythe telkens opnieuw uit, en de katholieke kerk zette de schilderijen graag in bij de contrareformatie. Ook in het landschapsgenre werden ze wereldvermaard. ‎Summary Cyril of Alexandria's scriptural exegesis is markedly trinitarian in scope and christological in focus throughout his writings. This book explores Cyril's christological exegesis predominantly in his Dialogues on the Trinity. Early Christian reading culture consists of more than simply how one reads, but also considers who reads and to what end. Accordingly, Cyril envisions that an ideal reader undertakes trinitarian and christological exegesis with certain Nicene commitments. Whereas partitive exegesis is generally understood as a reading strategy whereby interpreters identify some texts as speaking of the Son qua divine and others as speaking of the Son qua human, Cyril offers two closely related christological reading strategies in the Dialogues: 1. epochal exegesis, and 2. partitive exegesis. For Cyril, these methods of reading do not speak of there being two Sons, nor do they intend to divide the ineffable union of the two natures within the single incarnate Word. Cyril's christological exegesis 1. identifies any given text as speaking about the Son in one of the three stages of the economy (i.e., epochal exegesis), and 2. subsequently identifies whether texts speak about the Son qua divine Word, or the Son qua incarnate Word during His oikonomia with the flesh (i.e., partitive exegesis).
