First printing of the milestone paper in which Stieltjes introduced the ""Stieltjes Integral"". He is often called ""the father of the analytic theory of continued fractions"" for his work in this area. ""On 18 June 1894 he published Recherches sur les fractions continues in Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences. A fuller version of this work appeared in the Annales de la Faculté des Sciences de Toulouse."" The integral which he introduced here while solving the moment problem, that is, given the moments of all orders of a body, find the distribution of its mass."".... a mathematical milestone. The work represents the first general treatment of continued fractions as part of complex analytic function theory"" previously, only special cases had been considered."" First appearance of two importent papers in the physical theories of light and the atomic structure.""Sir John Herschel first noticed that sulpahte of quinine shows a blue colour when light is incident on it under certain circumstances"" later it was found that many other substances, if placed in a dark room and exposed to invisible radiations beyond the viloet end of the visible spectrum, emit a bluish or greenish light. To this phenomenon the name 'flourencence' was given by Stoken in 1852 (the paper offered), in a famous paper disclosing its true nature.""(Whittaker in ""A History of the Theores of Aether and Electricity"" Vol. I.p. 262).""However, long before the discovery of the electron made the compositeness of atoms explicit, the clearest signals that structure was called for came from spectra. Already in 1852, Stokes, in the importent memoir ""On the Change of Refrangibility of Ligh"" (to which Kelvin referred) had written. ""In all probability...the molecular vibrations by which...light is produced are not vibrations i which the molecules move among one another, but vibrations aming the constituent parts of the molecules themselves, performed by virtue of the internal forces which hold the parts of molecules together"". Please notice...at that time, the term 'molecule' often meant what we call 'atom'.""(Pais in""Inward Bound"", p. 175).

In-4 of 46 pages, title decorated with engravings. Original cased binding of black marbled paper (19th). Bookplate from the library of doctor Georges Kloss, the sale of which took place in 1835, carried out by Sotheby's, and which contained a large number of works from the library of the reformer Mélanchthon.
The title page is framed with woodcuts. Jean-Claude Morgolain in Coloquia Erasmia 1972.Born in 1476, the author studied medicine in Leipzig where he became a doctor in 1511. He was then named professor of this university. He was highly educated and became the friend of Erasmus, of whom there are several letters addressed to Stromer (Dechambre, Dict. Enc. Of sc. Med., Series 3, vol. 12). But what Dechambre does not tell us is that he was the founder of the famous Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig in 1525, a student counter in the wine cellar of his house. The house he razed and enlarged for the benefit of the current building dating from 1531. In his wine cellar, business was going well, because in 1534 Heinrich Stromer paid a third of the city's wine taxes. It was at Auerbachs Keller that Goethe was inspired by the local paintings to write his Faust. The establishment still exists today. The author dedicated the book to Albrecht von Brandenburg, Archbishop of Magdeburg, of which he was the doctor. Stromer also gained by his therapeutic success the esteem of the Duke of Saxony who overwhelmed him with benefits. It is said that the doctor wanted gaiety in his patients "and did not neglect anything to inspire them some". He often said that in the forty years that he had practiced medicine, he had observed that sadness killed more people than all kinds of violent deaths together. Stomer put his principles into practice and died happily around 1552. Jean-Claude Morgolain in Coloquia Erasmia 1972.

First appearance of Strohmeyer's account of his discovery of Cadmium. The history of its discovery was very complicated as some other laid claim to its discovery.Stromeyer was inspector general of apothecaries in Hannover. ""In 1817, fulfilling the duties of his office, he came across an apothecary's shop in which a bottle labeled zinc oxide contained zinc carbonate. Following this up, Stromeyer found himself interested in zinc carbonate, which turned yellow on strong heating as though it contained iron as an impurity, yet it contained no iron. He traced the yellow to an oxide not of zinc but of a hitherto unknown metal rather like it chemically. He named it cadmium for a zinc ore in which it is usually found accompanying the zinc.""(Asimov).Weeks ""Discovery of the Elements"", pp. 135-39.

This volume contains an edition and facing English translation of Explanation of the Divine Temple and On the Sacred Liturgy, the two commentaries on the pontifical (archieratic) Byzantine Divine Liturgy by St. Symeon of Thessalonika. This edition is based on MS Zagora 23, which contains extensive corrections and additions apparently added to the text by the author himself. The book opens with an historical and theological foreword on liturgical commentaries and mystagogy by Archimandrite Robert Taft. The chapters that follow survey the life and career of St Symeon, analyze the structure and theology of the commentaries, and conclude with an account of technical and editorial questions. A concluding index includes references to names, places, and topics in Symeon's text and the introductory chapters, as well as tracing key terms in the commentaries in both Greek and English. Studies and Texts (ST 168). Languages: English, Greek.
