‎DIAMONDS. THE QUEST FROM SOLID ROCK TO THE MAGIC OF DIAMONDS,‎

‎BE, Tectum, 2008 Hardback with slip case, 313 x 313mm., 432pp. ISBN 9789076886510.‎

‎This book takes you on a unique visual journey, exploring the extraordinary world of diamonds in many ways, a world apart as this substance has made and destroyed both countries and individuals. From the heart of a star to the human heart, diamonds are entwined with the stuff of life. No other natural substance is so lovely and so evocative of every human passion, good or bad, all the while still managing to far outlast all these things. The diamond cycle is a long journey stretching over aeons, buried deep in the earth. This beauty is difficult to win back, mines are found in some of the wildest and most remote places of the earth, from the chill of the Arctic Circle, tropical jungles or semi deserts, to the storm-racked coasts of Africa. Once won, the hardest substance on earth is cut and transformed with painstaking precision, in diamond centres across the globe. Diamonds is a record of that world. New book. ‎

‎Music in the Carolingian World. Witnesses to a Metadiscipline, Essays in Honor of Charles M. Atkinson‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 455 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:33 b/w, 12 col., 19 tables b/w., 23 musical examples, Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503603308.‎

‎Summary Music in the Carolingian World stems from a conference honoring the career and wide-ranging research of Prof. Charles M. Atkinson, leading scholar in early-medieval studies and author of the award-winning monograph, The Critical Nexus (2010). The volume brings together seventeen essays to explore the broad ramifications of music as an arena of study in early-medieval culture; taken together, they manifest the status of music not just as a field of research, but as a metadiscipline that embraces numerous fields and specializations in medieval studies, including philosophy, theology, literature, philology, paleography, liturgy, education, political and institutional history, as well as the practice, theory, and transmission of chant and related musical repertories. The essays are grouped into the four thematic categories of Verbum, Numerus, Ars, and Cultus, bookended by three keynote essays that touch in different ways on the theme of metadisciplinarity. ‎First printing of a groundbreaking paper in biochemistry and physiology, as Graham here introduced the distinction between colloidal and crystalloid substances by his method of separating animal and other fluids.""Although some isolated investigations on colloids had been carried out before Graham, his publications in this field laid the foundations of colloid chemistry. In ""On the Diffusion of Liquids,"" Graham applied to liquids the exact method of inquiry he had applied to gases twenty years before, and he succeeded in placing the subject of liquid diffusion on about the same footing as that to which he had raised the subject of gaseous diffusion prior to the discovery of his numerical law. He showed that the rate of diffusion was approximately proportional to the concentration of the original solution, increased with rise in temperature, and was almost constant for groups of chemically similar salts at equal absolute (not molecular) concentrations and different with different groups.""(DSB).Garrison & Morton: 688.‎

‎, The University of Toronto Press, 1972, Bound, sand-coloured cloth, illustrated dustjacket, 200 x 260mm., 216pp.‎

‎The work provides both the original French of the inscriptions in verse and a prose translation in English. ???LE RECUEIL DES INSCRIPTIONS was composed in 1558 by Estienne Jodelle, sometime member of the Pleiade, on commission from the city fathers of Paris for a celebration of the recapture of Calais from the English. In just over a week Jodelle drew up complete plans for the decoration of the Hotel de Ville in Paris and composed the inscriptions which were to accompany the required pictures, as well as the dramatic representations which were to follow the official banquet. This volume presents the authentic text of the LE RECUEIL DES INSCRIPTIONS and gives a full account of the celebration. In good condition.‎
