The Print Collection of the Royal Library of Belgium (HMPCRLB 2). This book presents resents both an overview of the print production in the 17th century Southern Low Countries and a focused approach to the work of three collaborators of Rubens. Apart from their work as painters, these artists quickly penetrated the world of prints and each dominated a specific market segment. Abraham Van Diepenbeeck was a prolific designer of individual prints and print series. Erasmus Quelinus II often drew models for book-illustrations. Cornelis Schut ran an important workshop which produced many beautiful etchings. The book explores how these artists positioned themselves in an artistic field, operating in a highly competitive field that presented both threats and new opportunities. Their oeuvre is firmly set in a European context, spanning local, regional and international markets. An analysis is made of the relation between prints as reproductions of paintings and prints as autonomous inventions. The book argues that the importance of prints as autonomous creations has been underestimated for the 17th century. The book studies the connections between the three artists and some forty professional engravers who were active in 17th-century Antwerp. Many biographical data on these engravers are presented, and more than 100 prints are published for the first time.

Catalogue of Early Netherlandish Painting: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (CENP 5). The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called ?pre-Eyckian painting?.

This book presents five texts that recount the history of Britain from the time of its legendary founding by Brutus in 1200 BC to the fall of Richard II in 1399 AD. All the texts are anonymous: the earliest was composed some time during the reign of Edward I (before 1307), the last early in the fifteenth century. The first text is the Harley Epitome, a prose account from Brutus to Henry III (1272); the second is the Metrical History, a versification of the Harley Epitome in end-rhymed hexameters; the third is a marginal prose commentary on the Metrical History; the fourth and fifth texts are a continuation of the Metrical History in elegiac couplets, from Edward I to Richard II (1272-1399), and a prose commentary on the continuation. Only a portion of the Metrical History has been printed before. While based on the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth and other English historians, these texts exhibit an interest in Scottish and northern English affairs that makes it certain they were composed in northern England, in the political context of the English-Scottish hostilities of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The Latin of the prose is fairly simple, and that of the poetry is unadorned; strong arguments are put forth in the introduction to the volume that the texts could have formed part of a programme for elementary history teaching in fourteenth-century York. The introduction discusses the authorship, place of composition, and purpose of the works, as well as the manuscript tradition, the versification and the language of the texts. A select bibliography, explanatory and textual notes, and an index of sources complete the volume.

First printing of the paper in which Airy describes his remarkable experiments aiming at finding the density of the earth. His approach to the problem was to determine the differences of gravity at the top as well at the bottom of a suitable deep mine.""One of the most remarkable of Airy's researches was his determination of the mean density of the Earth. In 1826, the idea occurred to him of attacking this problem by means of pendulum experiments at the top and bottom of a deep mine. His first attempt, made in the same year, at the Dolcoath mine in Cornwall, failed in consequence of an accident to one of the pendulums. A second attempt in 1828 was defeated by a flooding of the mine, and many years elapsed before another opportunity presented itself. The experiments eventually took place at the Harton pit near South Shields in 1854. Their immediate result was to show that gravity at the bottom of the mine exceeded that at the top by 1/19286 of its amount, the depth being 383 m (1,256 ft) From this he was led to the final value of Earth's specific density of 6.566.[This value, although considerably in excess of that previously found by different methods, was held by Airy, from the care and completeness with which the observations were carried out and discussed, to be ""entitled to compete with the others on, at least, equal terms."" (The currently accepted value for Earth's density is 5.5153 g/cm.). (Wikipedia).
