‎Multicultural Europe and Cultural Exchange in the Middle Ages and Renaissance,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, VIII+182 p., 25 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514703.‎

‎Contemporary criticism focuses on contested issues at the borders and in the interstices of cultures. Medieval and Early Modern European culture, previously conceived as monolithic, is now being reconceived as heterogeneous, a site of tensions, contest, accommodation, and subversion. The essays in this volume describe a Europe that is multicultural in fact, and trace the exchanges between cultural groups, subcultures and dominant cultures, and between individuals and the cultures that they inhabit. The critical works in this volume are drawn from a variety of disciplines: art history, literary studies, history and historiography, and cultural studies. A number are interdisciplinary, examining topics of cultural studies as diverse as fashion, rhetorical self-fashioning, and the history of architecture, all in the context of their surrounding contexts. A special strength of this volume is the visual impact of its three illustrated monographs. These essays will appeal to all who see the importance of reconceiving European history in terms of contemporary multicultural perspectives, as well as to those who are specially interested in medieval architecture, the history of fashion, French and English Renaissance literature, Hebraic studies, and medieval and Renaissance Mediterranean history. ‎Anonymous Noblemen. The Generalization of Hidalgo Status in the Basque Country (1250-1525),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2011 Hardback, XIV 277 pages ., 10 b/w tables, 10 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. . ISBN 9782503532448.‎

‎Towards the end of the Middle Ages one of Europe?s most important concentrations of nobility was to be found on the Spanish Atlantic coast between Asturias and Guipuzcoa. Many of these nobles were hidalgos, proud but impoverished nobles common in sixteenth-century picaresque novels a full four hundred years before historians turned their attention to them. This book (which is linked to over a decade of research by a team of specialists into the social, economic, political, and ideological transformations that the Basque Country underwent between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries) analyses the group in the Basque Country, with particular emphasis on the question of how and why hidalgo status became universal in the coastal areas but not in the interior. In part one the author reviews the historiography both of this group and of the lesser nobility elsewhere in Europe. The group is then characterized and placed in its historical context: the social conflicts that racked the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Finally, in a series of case studies of the hidalgos of Alava and their commoner neighbours, with whom they frequently struggled for control of village life, the author studies their reactions to the political transformations which took place at the time, as well as their relationship with the landed aristocracy, in whose client networks they inevitably became involved. ‎Tolkien began The Lord of the Rings between 16 and 19 December 1937, three months after The Hobbit was published and George Allen & Unwin were encouraging Tolkien, against his inclination, to write a sequel. As C. S. Lewis commented: "If Ariosto rivalled it in invention (in fact he does not) he would still lack its heroic seriousness. No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner laws; none so seemingly objective, so disinfected from the taint of the author's merely individual psychology, no so relevant to the actual human situation yet so free from allegory. And what fine shading there is in the variations of style to meet the almost endless diversity of scenes and characters - comic, homely, epic, monstrous, or diabolic." J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" is a timeless epic that weaves a tapestry of adventure, heroism, and profound themes. Its enduring popularity can be attributed to Tolkien's masterful storytelling, his richly imagined world of Middle-earth, and the timeless lessons it imparts to readers. Whether you are a fan of fantasy literature or simply appreciate a captivating tale, "The Lord of the Rings" is an absolute must-read.? "The Lord of the Rings" has had an enormous impact on popular culture. Its success led to the development of film adaptations directed by Peter Jackson, which garnered critical acclaim and introduced Middle-earth to a wider audience. The books have been translated into numerous languages, inspiring subsequent generations of fantasy authors and serving as a touchstone for the genre. Tolkien's vivid storytelling and meticulous world-building continue to captivate readers to this day. Parfait exemplaire. Un véritable "precieux". A really wonderful precious one !‎
