‎Summary This book provides a series of studies concerning unique medieval texts that can be defined as 'books of knowledge', such as medieval chronicles, bestiaries, or catechetic handbooks. Thus far, scholarship of intellectual history has focused on concepts of knowledge to describe a specific community, or to delimit intellectuals in society. However, the specific textual tool for the transmission of knowledge has been missing. Besides oral tradition, books and other written texts were the only sources of knowledge, and they were thus invaluable in efforts to receive or transfer knowledge. That is one reason why texts that proclaim to introduce a specific field of expertise or promise to present a summary of wisdom were so popular. These texts discussed cosmology, theology, philosophy, the natural sciences, history, and other fields. They often did so in an accessible way to maintain the potential to also attract a non-specialised public. The basic form was usually a narrative, chronologically or thematically structured, and clearly ordered to appeal to readers. Books of this kind could be disseminated in dozens or even hundreds of copies, and were often available (by translation or adaptation) in various languages, including the vernacular. In exploring these widely-disseminated and highly popular texts that offered a precise segment of knowledge that could be accessed by readers outside the intellectual and social elite, this volume intends to introduce books of knowledge as a new category within the study of medieval literacy. ‎Summary The papers gathered in this volume focus on 'Medieval Translations and their Readership', the special strand of the 11th Cardiff Conference on the Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages. The volume discusses the role of the reader in the process of translation, communities of readers and their active participation in translators' choices, and the translation as a result of a dialogue between author, text and its reader. Translations of works of theology and religious education, the focus of most of the contributions to this volume, constitute excellent material for research into medieval lay audiences. Vernacular religious educational texts from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century show a great deal of conformity. Individual authors resorted to similar strategies and techniques to meet any translation challenges, to fulfil educational aims, or to relate to their readers and to accommodate their expectations. Simultaneously, the readers played a crucial role as they shaped the production of texts in many ways. Research into Middle English pastoral and devotional literature and the conditions of its production still dominates scholarly work in the field. Religious texts in vernaculars other than Middle English have so far received little attention. This volume tries to tackle this lacuna by offering a careful comparative analysis of relevant vernacular texts across Europe, including Slavonic works, using historiographical, philological, and linguistic methods as well as literary scholarly approaches. The sixteen chapters are organized in three sections. The first one, 'Authors and Readers', brings together articles examining the idea of a model reader as expressed in translations of biblical texts and texts of religious instruction. The contributions in the second section, on the 'Dissimination of Knowledge', focus on how translators addressed readers, how people read, and how they used the manuscripts and printed books made for them. The target audience or model reader of the first section is here put into perspective with the help of discussions of reading practices. The last section, 'Religious Education in Transition', comprises contributions which focus on textual material from the period when printed books gradually changed, the relationship between languages, texts, authors, and readers. Avec quelques exceptions, ces textes furent rediges et etudies en Espagne, en Provence, en Italie et dans l?empire byzantin. En continuite avec le volume I de la collection, les cinq premiers manuscrits decrits (Hebreu 704 a 708) donnent des commentaires sur le Guide des egares ou d?autres textes se rapportant a Maimonide. Ici encore, certains de ces manuscrits mettent en evidence l?existence ? jusqu?ici ignoree ? d?ecoles de philosophie et montrent a quel point la philosophie juive etait vivante entre le XIIIe et le XVe siecle. Les cinq exemplaires des Guerres du Seigneur de Gersonide (Hebreu 721 a 725) ont des caracteres codicologiques et paleographiques differents, car les ?uvres de ce grand philosophe etaient etudiees en dehors des ecoles. D?autres ?uvres, melant cabale et philosophie, sont inedites et pratiquement inconnues : la Pierre de Saphir, d?Elnathan Qalqish (Hebreu 727 et 728) ; la Perfection de la beaute, de Samuel Sarsa (Hebreu 729 a 732) ; les Demeures de Jacob, de Jacob ben Salomon Sarfati (Hebreu 733), livre en partie autobiographique et copie autographe qui nous emmenent dans la Provence du XIVe siecle. Plusieurs volumes sont consacres a l?explication des commandements et a la morale. Parmi eux, on releve deux copies d?un ouvrage du cabaliste Yosef Giqatilia (Hebreu 713 et 714) et quatre copies des Degres des vertus de Yehiel ben Yequtiel ?Anav (715 a 718), livre qui fut longtemps a la mode en Italie. Deux manuscrits renvoient a l?aire ashkenaze (Hebreu 709 et 712). Le second porte des textes polemiques du XIIIe siecle : celui de la ? Dispute de Paris ? (1240-42), la version la plus ancienne du Sefer Yosef ha-Meqane et un florilege polemique de citations latines en caracteres hebreux (en cours d?edition par l?auteur de ce volume) qui illustre des aspects inconnus de la controverse judeo-chretienne. ‎
