Sinds 1921 bezitten de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgi een Voorstelling van de Maagd in de Tempel, toegeschreven aan de Meester van het Gezicht op Sainte-Gudule. Het is een fragment van een groep, waarvan de Koning Boudewijnstichting onlangs drie andere fragmenten voor de Musea verwierf. De publicatie wil deze altaarstukken situeren in de productie van de Meester van het Gezicht op Sint-Goedele in het bijzonder en, meer algemeen, in de Brusselse schilderkunst op het einde van de 15de eeuw, alsook in de historische context van die periode. In verschillende essays worden de resultaten gepresenteerd van het onderzoek dat werd uitgevoerd tijdens de restauratie van de verschillende fragmenten. Er wordt een reconstructie van het originele altaarstuk voorgesteld en een diepgaande studie van de schildertechniek van de meester. Dit werk onthult een geheel nieuwe visie op het werk van de Meester van het Gezicht op Sint-Goedele, een van de meest productieve schilders in de hoofdstad van de hertogen van Bourgondi , aan wie tot op heden geen grote publicatie is gewijd.
