‎The catalogue entitled Micha l Borremans The Duck is published for the exhibition of the same name held at the Rudolfinum Gallery. The exhibition is a cross-section of the work of Belgian artist, painter and video artist Micha l Borremans (*1963). The publication includes an essay by the exhibition curator Petr Nedoma on the work of Borremans, who gained international fame for his innovative approach to painting, and a text by art historian Petr Va?ous. It includes reproductions of all the works on display - twenty-seven canvases, including three recent, never-before-exhibited works that the artist completed for The Duck exhibition in late 2019 - three videos, and one short film. ‎Summary This volume investigates the origins of one of the most important notions of contemporary society: privacy. Based on case studies from the early modern Low Countries, privacy is tackled from various historical perspectives: social and cultural history, and the history of art and architecture. The Dutch Republic is well known for its financial success, which went hand in hand with the development of a distinguished bourgeois culture and religious toleration. The accumulation of wealth among the urban population led to changes in various spheres, from daily life to art. Privacy, as a concept, started to develop in this period. Indeed, new ideas about housing with the invention of corridors, separate rooms that could be locked, and the separation of the 'common' and the 'private' space, all illustrate the growing importance of privacy in this geographical area. This volume traces perspectives on early modern privacy and private life based on primary sources in several domains: letters, diaries, and poems; genre painting in art; communal life as illustrated by the Jewish community; and finally, the homes of the Dutch elite. The essays in this volume make a key contribution to the emergence of early modern privacy studies as a research field, and to the ongoing discussion of privacy in the Low Countries. ‎Summary Our modern notions of privacy have their roots in the early modern period. When studying this historical background, one of the most important sources is correspondence. Letters sent from one person to another reflect specific situations, ideas, thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Contextualizing an epistolary exchange provides information about the world and values of past individuals. This volume presents essays that deal with a variety of early modern correspondence. The letters analysed, written in French, Dutch, German, and English, speak to very different contexts and cultural codes. ‎Fort vol. in-4° (305 x 222 mm), [4] ff. - VIII - 624 pp., demi-vélin, dos lisse avec initiales en queue, tranches de tête mouchetée, non rogné en gouttière et en queue (reliure de l'époque). Édition originale, elle est illustrée de 354 reproductions directes d'après les oeuvres du Maître. Envoi de l'auteur : « A son cher confrère Henry Roujon / Bien affectueusement / Em. Michel » et lettre autographe signée de l'auteur au même. Dans celle-ci (3 pp. 1/2 in-12°) datée du 28 avril 1907, Émile Michel propose que parmi les nombreux prix décernés par l'Académie des beaux-arts, il serait judicieux de « réserver quelques places aux écrits relatifs aux arts ou à l'histoire de l'art en général » (ce qui donc n'avait apparemment jamais été le cas) et précise que les prix Jean Reynaud et Houllevigue décernés tous deux cette année là permettraient dans leur programme de récompenser un tel ouvrage. Il recommande alors longuement et vivement André Michel pour son Histoire de l'Art, « un véritable monument, ainsi qu'en ont jugé les critiques d'art les plus sérieux [...]. Si la France, était jusqu'à présent vis à vis de l'Allemagne dans un état d'infériorité très réelle pour un travail de cette nature, elle se trouvera désormais, de l'aveu même des allemands, pourvue d'une étude d'ensemble tout à fait supérieure ». Émile Michel (1828 - 1909), peintre et critique d'art français, est surtout connu pour ses travaux sur l'art flamand et hollandais. Il est élu membre libre de l'Académie des Beaux-arts en 1892. Provenance : Henry Roujon (1853 - 1914) avec ses initiales " H. R. " poussées en queue de dos et son ex-libris gravé sur bois contrecollé au contreplat supérieur. Haut fonctionnaire, essayiste et romancier, il est secrétaire de Jules Ferry, puis directeur des Beaux-arts en 1891. Élu membre libre de l'Académie des beaux-arts en 1899, il en devient secrétaire perpétuel en 1903. Membre de l'Académie française en 1911, Roujon fut un grand ami de Mallarmé et de Maupassant. Habile restauration en queue du mors inférieur, manque à un coin, dos légèrement jauni. ‎
