‎Henry Van de Velde (1863-1957) werd wellicht het bekendst als architect van de boekentoren te Gent. Maar hij was ook actief als schilder, tekenaar, boekillustrator, ontwerper van allerhande gebruiksvoorwerpen, artistiek raadgever bij de meest uiteenlopende instanties, pedagoog, en theoreticus. Zijn invloed in de Europese culturele wereld vanaf het fin-de-siecle tot in het interbellum was enorm, en ook nu nog gaat zijn naam vaak over de tongen. Een aspect van zijn architectuur is relatief onderbelicht gebleven: de vier huizen die hij voor zichzelf ontwierp. Deze huizen zijn niet alleen representatieve voorbeelden van de verschillende periodes van zijn stilistische ontwikkeling, maar ook getuigen van zijn rijkgevulde leven. Walter Benjamin schreef over de huizenarchitectuur van Van de Velde: ?Bij hem verschijnt het huis als een uitdrukking van de persoonlijkheid.?
