Het verscheen voor het eerst in 1956, bij De Bezige Bij, en betekende de doorbraak van fotograaf Ed van der Elsken. Door middel van een filmische opeenvolging van tekst en korrelige zwart-witfoto's vertelt Van der Elsken ons een semiautobiografisch liefdesverhaal: dat van Manuel en Ann, gesitueerd in de grimmige sfeer van het naoorlogse Parijs van de jaren 1950. Van der Elsken volgt Ann met zijn camera op haar zwerftocht door Parijs, terwijl ze danst, drinkt, flirt, vecht, slaapt, verliefd wordt... Ann is eigenlijk de legendarische bohemienne Vali Myers, een Australische kunstenares die bevriend was met Cocteau en Genet. ‎Gedurende de Duitse bezetting moest een Joods Nederlands echtpaar een schilderij verkopen om te kunnen onderduiken. De speurtocht naar het schilderij bleef lang vruchteloos, totdat Bureau Herkomst Gezocht ontdekte dat het in een Duits museum was terechtgekomen. Het Duitse museum en de erven kwamen overeen dat het schilderij, een werk van Camille Pissarro uit 1882, in het museum zou blijven.‎
