The second of an important multi-volume catalogue project, this publication features work by Francis Picabia (1879-1953) that dates from 1915 into mid-1927. Beginning with Picabia's elaboration of a personal machinist aesthetic, the book continues by looking at the artist's central role in the formulation of the Paris Dada movement. That irreverent movement included Picabia's increasingly provocative mechanomorphic compositions, complemented by his unorthodox writings and graphic designs as well as socially powerful performances. The volume finishes with a look at Picabia's creations of the mid-1920s, which included memorable collages and flamboyant figurative compositions known as the "monsters." This catalogue raisonne offers scholarly readings of his work by major authors

Summary In 1617, after seven years of war between Sweden and Russia and talks facilitated by English and Dutch diplomats, the peace treaty of Stolbovo was signed. This important but little-studied document was to form the basis for relationships between Sweden and Russia for the next one hundred years, before it was replaced by the Peace of Nystad in 1721, and it had a huge influence on the lives of the people who lived in the region. This wide-ranging volume draws together contributions by scholars from Britain, Sweden, Germany, Estonia, Russia, and Finland to offer new insights into, and analysis of this peace treaty and its impact on the wider region during the seventeenth century. Covering disciplines including political and economic history, church history, and Slavonic and Classical philology, the chapters gathered here shed new light on, and provide a new understanding of, the Early Modern period in the Baltic Sea area. Arne Quinze started out in the 1980s as a graffiti artist and soon moved from street art to public art. His name has become synonymous with monumental installations. We now find them all over the world, from Germany and France to the United States, China and Brazil. But his work also includes paintings, smaller sculptures and light installations. This book tells the story of Quinze's commitment to breaking the monotony of our contemporary society by giving space to the powerful beauty of nature. With over 500 photos, an exclusive interview with Hervé Mikaeloff and an essay by Xavier Roland.

Summary For the first time in English, the Praedestinatus represents a moment in the fifteen-century old theological conversation in Latin Christianity about the topics of grace, predestination and free will. Written as a response to Augustine's growing theological influence, this book should not merely be regarded as a work of apologetics, despite the author's intention, but seen as breaking controversial new ground because of his claim that a small circle of heretics was acting as a 'fifth column' within the Church, undermining orthodox beliefs concerning God, his providence and all-inclusive love. The introduction sheds light on the authorship, dating and historical context of this work. It documents how this text was received and critically assessed for a period of over twelve centuries: from the time of Augustine in the fifth century to that of the bitter Jansenist controversy in the seventeenth. It entered those latter debates shortly after its rediscovery by Jacques Sirmond in the library of the Reims cathedral in a manuscript that, in the ninth century, was in the possession of Hincmar - the archbishop of Reims who in his time had revived disputes about grace and free will. Sirmond named the text '[the] Praedestinatus' when he published its first edition in 1643. After a three hundred year hiatus, interest in the Praedestinatus revived in the twentieth century thanks to German and French scholars who studied the book's theological trajectory and claims. Its critical edition was eventually accomplished in 2000 by Italian scholar Franco Gori. The present translation is based on Gori's edition.
, MER - Borgerhoff & Lamberigts, softcover, 166 pag. *** met handgeschreven opdracht / gesigneerd door LUC Dondeyne. ISBN 9789463931144.
Through his work, Luc Dondeyne offers us his view of the world. He gives us the opportunity to look together with him by showing us sometimes literally that he looks at the world through a lens. This looking together results in special and unusual compositions, such as portraits without face or with the face turned away, as well as people who are portrayed from the back. The spectator thus becomes part of the triangular relationship Dondeyne deliberately involves himself and ourselves in: the triangle between the artist as viewer, spectator and maker. Those looking at the works are in the middle of this triangle, and consequently they become part of the artist?s gaze and therefore also of the work. The intuition, imagination and inner wisdom with which the third eye or the sixth chakra fills us, may also open the gate to the collective memory, on which not only Dondeyne relies but also the spectator who looks at the artist?s works. Frequently, Dondeyne refers in his titles and images consciously or subconsciously to the history of art and culture. He invites us to open our own third eye and to join him to tap into his huge source of knowledge and associations that allows him to connect that which he sees through the third eye with that which he depicts thereof on the canvas or on paper, and with the spectator who contemplates the final result.

Summary This volume reflects on Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) and the international reception of his work 150 years after his death. Rossini was the most influential opera composer of the first half of the 19th century. His exceptional position in contemporary cultural life and the international success of his works meant that monuments were erected during his lifetime and biographies, novels and plays about him appeared. The volume explores his literary reception and the dissemination of his operas in the 19th and 20th centuries in various countries, focusing in particular on stylistic and compositional legacy, the theory and practice of operatic singing, treatises and biographical memoires, and Rossini's position in politics, society and public opinion. Translations and adaptations of Rossini's libretti are analyzed with regard to their functions within in the performances in different cultures and languages. Several chapters address the influence of Rossini and his music on other composers such as Giacomo Meyerbeer, Ottorino Respighi and Ferruccio Busoni. The fame that once surrounded Rossini, however, has been lost in the course of time, and many of his works fell into oblivion. The last section of the volume sheds new light on the so-called 'Rossini Renaissance', the revival of his works in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries.
