‎Summary The volume offers the first critical edition of the medieval Latin translation of Aristotle's Physiognomonica. This treatise, nowadays considered pseudo-Aristotelian, is translated into Latin between 1258 and 1266 by Bartholomew of Messina and deals with physiognomy, a discipline which connects outward appearance and inward character traits. The translation received wide circulation at the University of Paris by means of several exemplaria. The Physiognomonica has survived in 128 manuscripts, which makes it Bartholomew's most diffused translation. The introduction of the volume first discusses the text and manuscript tradition and then the relation to the Greek model. It appears that the Latin translation contains a unique version of the text compared to the extant Greek manuscripts, which makes it an important witness for the Greek tradition as well. ‎Summary This book forms the complement to the first volume published in 2000. The preface contains some remarks about the transmission of the text as a supplement to the first volume. Then follow the critical edition of books 6-10, and the indices for the whole text. The complete edition gives access to the longest and most important work from Aristotle's zoology, De historia animalium, in the Latin translation by William of Moerbeke. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. The bilingual indices give access to the richness of the translator's vocabulary and provide an indispensable tool for the study of his translation method. Except for De partibus animalium, all of Moerbeke's translations from the Aristotelian zoological corpus are now available in critical editions.‎

‎Summary Roman Imperial denarii from the first-third cen turies AD are, almost without exception, the most common ancient coinage to be found in Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe beyond the Roman limes. Perhaps surprisingly, however, a signifi cant percentage of these coins are in fact coun terfeit, comprised largely of denarii subaerati (plated denarii, fourr es) and denarii flati (base-metal cast copies). Moreover, these fake coins were not only manufactured by Romans them selves, but also by barbarian peoples in Eastern Europe, far from the Roman limes, in what should be considered a mass-scale phenomena. This volume draws together archaeologi cal, numismatic, and historical research in order to offer a new assessment of the production and use of counterfeit Roman Imperial denarii both within the European provinces of the Roman Empire and in European Barbaricum. ‎Dramatic depictions of human forms ? writhing painfully, dissolving, wrestling or engulfing one another, seated or in motion ? are ubiquitous in the work of Francis Bacon (1909-1992), one of the most eminent painters of the 20th century. Bacon portrayed the ordeal of the vulnerable, defencelessly exposed body like no other artist of his generation. His individuals are usually alone, isolated from their surroundings, trapped in empty, windowless rooms or behind the bars of cages. Bacon?s figures act on stage-like platforms, doubled over in torment, sliding into formlessness. By wiping, scratching and erasures, Bacon converted the picture surface into a field of perpetual activity ? and in the process, created images of great forcefulness, sensibility and beauty. Bacon found his models not only in the history of art, but also in photographs of athletes, soccer players, or boxers in combat. He also betrayed a strong interest in the photographic sequences through which Eadweard Muybridge, in the later 19th century, registered the phases of a path of animal movement. Such instinctively performed motions disclosed to Bacon actions of an original sensuality which he strove to capture in his pictures.‎
