Cassiano's Antichita Diverse album, here published for the first time in its entirety, is essentially the Paper Museum in embryo. The modest title ('Various Antiquities') hardly does justice to the range of material represented, for almost every category of portable antiquity to be found in the cabinets of Rome is illustrated: gems, coins, gaming pieces, vessels and tableware of all kinds, oil lamps, weights and measures, keys, weapons, military equipment, rings, musical instruments, burial urns, altars and tripods, figurines, statues and reliefs, in every possible material from terracotta and bone to tin, lead, bronze, silver, gold, marble and semi-precious stones. The 500 or so studies, on 108 sheets, date mainly from the early 1620s, and were produced probably with the (unrealised) intention that they would be reproduced as a series of prints to serve the antiquarian interests of the pan-European 'Republic of Letters'. Elena Vaiani is a research fellow in the history of archaeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. Her research interests are concerned with the relationships between the history of art, collections, antiquarian studies and the visual arts in the early modern period, with particular reference to small objects (such as coins, gems and domestic utensils). Amanda Claridge was formerly Professor of Roman Archaeology at Royal Holloway, University of London, specialising in Roman art, topography and architecture, and with a particular interest in antiquarian studies of the early modern period. Cassiano dal Pozzo?s extraordinary endeavour to encapsulate the knowledge of his time is intriguing on many levels. The publication of the Antichit Diverse album is a crowning achievement, but it is by no means the last word." This volume comprises an extensive study on the legend of Thecla in the Armenian tradition, as well as a philological analysis of Armenian sources on Thecla and on the Martyrdom of Paul compared to parallel texts in other languages (Greek, Syriac, Latin, Coptic). In this volume, the critical edition of Armenian texts is published in combination with a thoroughly commented translation. In addition to a general introduction on the Acts of Paul, the volume also contains an overview of the cycle of Paul in Armenian, and of the history of the research on the field of the Armenian Christian Apocryphal Literature. When one attempts to piece together the itinerary by which saint Thecla fully established her position in the religious environment of ancient and medieval Armenia, literary and liturgical accounts may be found spanning almost ten centuries, from the fifth to the fourteenth century. To support this research, this monograph takes into consideration the ties between Syriac and Armenian Christianity in the fifth century; the ancient Armenian historiography; the correlation between ancient Byzantine and Armenian literature of the twelfth century; and, finally, the diplomatic and religious relationships between Armenians and the Latin kingdoms of the West in the fourteenth century. Still within the fifth century, at least three works written directly in Armenian presuppose the legend of Thecla. In these writings the paradigms of holiness embodied by the saint have influenced the representation of female figures associated with the origins of Armenian Christianity. The milestones of this itinerary in place and time are indicators of the established importance of the legend in Armenian tradition. At the same time, they form interesting evidence regarding the way legends and traditions spread through the Christian communities of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Summary In the wider context of the border conflicts that involve Rome as a third authority super partes, for which there is evidence already in the second century BC, two epigraphic documents stand out for the peculiarities distinguishing them from all others: the so-called Polcevera Tablet (concerning a dispute between Genuates and Viturii Langenses) and the Cippus Abellanus (related to a border dispute between Nolani and Abellani and written in Oscan). They make us aware of the political and municipal dynamics underlying the complex principle of Roman arbitration, often required to resolve territorial disputes, which were gradually evolving as Rome opened up to the East. What role did the Roman Senate play in such disputes? What exactly was the function of the referees sent by the City to settle the disputes with a super partes judgment? What was the importance of the agrarian reform of the Gracchi and the realisation of road axes in the acuity of such antagonisms? These are the questions to which this study tries to provide an answer. TABLE OF CONTENTS Illustrations Preface Introduction (Maria Federica Petraccia) 1.
