‎Pieter Bruegel the Elder is best known for his peasant and winter scenes, archetypal images of the Low Countries, but his masterpieces always manage to transcend the local. A defining element in his hybrid landscapes are the Alpine rock formations he observed on his way to or return from Italy. Bruegel travelled to the peninsula around 1552, and his sojourn lasted about two years. Though remarkably little of his artistic production in Italy has been preserved, later compositions demonstrate that Bruegel must have journeyed to Rome, and then as far as Naples and Messina. The purpose of this book is to reassess Bruegel?s encounter with Italy within a broad cultural-historical context and in light of recent scholarship. Communication between Italy and the Low Countries was intense during Bruegel?s time, as were artistic, political, and economic relations. While Italo-Netherlandish ties interconnected Bruegel?s world on multiple levels, Bruegel?s relationship with Italy has mostly been viewed from the perspective of his individual travels. It has often been observed that, unlike many of his fellow artist-travellers, no copies after antique or modern Italian artworks by his hand are known, and that the impact of Bruegel?s encounter with Italy is not immediately evident from his work. Bruegel and Italy/Bruegel e l?Italia rephrases this question: Why, then, Bruegel did travel to Italy? To formulate potential answers, its authors look not only at the master and his work but also consider the cultural and artistic exchange between Italy and the Low Countries before, during, and following Bruegel?s Italian travels. In doing so, they trace the conditions, traditions, and networks that shaped and motivated Bruegel?s dialogue with Italy, opening new avenues in the study of this notoriously under-documented master.‎

‎Carlo Scarpa Sandro Bagnoli reconstructs and expands upon the special relationship between one of the major architects of the twentieth century and a visionary entrepreneur. Though Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) collaborated only rarely, when furniture producer Dino Gavina asked him to design a series of furnishings, Scarpa brought in the young, brilliant architect Sandro Bagnoli to help him complete the projects. Scarpa's design repertoire, from buildings to utensils, was challenged by the invitation to create furniture items, or "mini-architectures." This volume, edited by Bagnoli, analyzes in detail the conception and production of the Sarpi and Florian tables, the Rialto bookcase and the Toledo bed, along with Scarpa's more radical research, which remains only in sketches that are reproduced in this volume. ‎Based on the excavations of 1965-1980, this second volume in the series provides an overview of the medieval art and architecture that was found below the Florence Duomo and Baptistery Archaeological Campaigns below the Florence Duomo and Baptistery, 1895-1980 presents the results of one of the major archaeological campaigns of our times: the decade-long excavation below Florence's cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore. The book presents a cutaway vision of a great city that would be hard to match anywhere, exploring a site that was in use for 1500 years, from the founding of the Roman settlement of Florence to the burial there of Giotto and Brunelleschi. In terms of structures, the excavation uncovered a Roman house, an Early Christian basilica, a Carolingian crypt, and further rebuildings from the eleventh century and later. For artifacts, the findings constitute a virtual encyclopedia of ancient and medieval art in mosaics, frescoes, the grave of Florence's earliest documented saint, the first elaborate tomb of the Medici, and outstanding examples of Roman and medieval glass, metalwork, and ceramics. Forty-one specialists in material culture and archaeological science report on those finds in the book, and hundreds more illustrations are carried on the author's website, www.franklintoker.com. But the findings from below the Florence Duomo are not limited to art history. The Roman house gives a glimpse of life on the Italian peninsula in the half-millennium between Emperor Augustus and the Ostrogoth king Theodoric. The construction of a large basilica with its rich mosaic floor marks the evident revival of a battered city: a turn of events entirely unexpected from the few other fragments of early Florentine history that survive. ‎Vilvoorde City, meer bepaald in de Far-West bundelt de resultaten van het studieproject ?Sociale huisvesting in Vlaams-Brabant? in opdracht van het provinciebestuur. Het werd door Amsab-Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis uitgevoerd in het kader van het onderzoeksprogramma ?Accenten uit de geschiedenis van Vlaams-Brabant?. Amsab-ISG koos voor een diepgaande studie van de wijk Far-West in Vilvoorde. De kern van deze buurt is de tuinwijk Maurits Duche. In 1921 gaf de sociale huisvestingsmaatschappij De Vilvoordse Haard de opdracht tot de bouw van een nieuwe wijk. Die ontwikkelde zich al snel tot een hechte gemeenschap waar cafes en sport een belangrijke plaats innamen. Tuinwijken waren zeer populair toen Belgie na de Eerste Wereldoorlog oplossingen moest zoeken voor het ernstig woningtekort. Het idee kwam uit Engeland waar Ebenezer Howard in 1902 de term ?tuinsteden? introduceerde in zijn werk Garden Cities of To-Morrow. Vanuit een utopische visie pleitte hij voor nieuwe geplande steden omgeven door landbouwgebied en groen. Toen na de Eerste Wereldoorlog meer dan 100.000 huizen moesten worden heropgebouwd in Belgie, zagen socialistisch en modernistisch geinspireerde architecten het heil in tuinwijken, de afgeslankte versie van tuinsteden. De opdrachtgevers waren vooral cooperatieve huurdersverenigingen en sociale huisvestingsmaatschappijen. In drie hoofdstukken krijgt de lezer een historisch overzicht van het ontstaan van de Far-West tot de uitbreiding ervan vandaag. Het archiefmateriaal bood dikwijls verrassende details die het verleden weer springlevend maakten. De wijk is echter meer dan een geografische afbakening van een stuk grond. Het is ook een verzameling van persoonlijke ervaringen en geschiedenissen. Daarom bundelt het vierde hoofdstuk niet alleen herinneringen aan het leven in de wijk van vroeger, maar ook getuigenissen van jonge bewoners nu.
