The catalogue examines the relationship between gender, art and Modernism. It will focus on the question of what kinds of stylistic and visual imagery were developed by women artists in response to the social change, political upheaval and technical innovations of the first half of the last century. The selected artists were united by the search for a new visual vocabulary to depict the nature and challenges of modern life and respond to the pressing issues of their time.

Many projects serve as licenses for adventurous travels and rambles through the most desolate of places in extreme circumstances. Mich le Matyn (b. 1978) uses her camera in a very intense and personal experience of the landscape, and in a fashion highly contrasting to the usual documentary approach of distance and objectivity. Her sensitivity for nature is stimulated by a research in age-old folk tales en customs, anthropological myths and sagas, but also popular comics and films about the narrow, supposed boundaries between man and animal, between human and demon. These animistic thoughts, folktales, and charged places are triggers for Mich le Matyn's travels. She uses traveling as an atelier. The way of dealing with her surroundings can be read as 'participative observation'. It connects Matyn's photography to her performances. "To become a beast To wander loose To buy a leash To seek a tamer To get stuck on thoughts To get caught To go feral To breed mistakes To seek a tamer To speak to no one To seek a tamer To withold no one To seek a tamer To leave no stone unturned To seek a tamer To ignore every opposition For centuries the master For centuries the beast" From: 'Arrows of Thought' Saskia De Coster

Lee Miller (1907-1977) had many lives: she was a model, muse, photographer, war correspondent and Surrealist chef. It is well known that she was 'discovered' on the street at nineteen and that her face appeared on the cover of Vogue a few months later, that she inspired numerous famous illustrators, photographers and artists, and that she flouted convention by picking up a camera and making a name for herself with seductive fashion photos, Surrealist experiments and penetrating war reports.

He is best known for his tinted photographs of dreamy worlds filled with naked or half-naked figures against a peeling wall, often reproducing the same elements and symbols. This was partly out of sheer necessity because he only had the cellar at his disposal and could not store much stuff in it. His photographs are reminiscent of mid-19th century erotic photography and the work of painters such as Balthus and Bernard Faucon. In his early days it is mainly about depicting youth, later the theme shifts to the development from youth to adulthood and old age (following the subject in the same composition over several years). Religion and the ambiguity between man and woman are also recurring themes in Jan Saudek's work. His work became the subject of censorship in the West in the 1990s. Some of his photos appeared on album covers. Such as Anorexia Nervosa (New Obscurantis Order), Soul Asylum (Grave Dancers Union), Daniel Lanois (For the Beauty of Wynona) and Beautiful South (Welcome to the Beautiful South).

A new collection of Saul Leiter's work, much of it published here for the first time. Saul Leiter remained relatively unsung until he was rediscovered by curators and critics in his early 80s, and his work has been drastically re-evaluated over the last two decades. Leiter's painterly images evoked the flow and rhythm of life on the mid-century streets of New York in luminous colour, at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. His complex and impressionistic photographs are as much about evoking an atmosphere as nailing the decisive moment. In recent years, Leiter has been in the spotlight more and more with a series of exhibitions and publications. His studio in New York's East Village, where he had lived since 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation. The foundation has begun a full-scale survey and organization of his more than 80,000 works, with the aim of compiling the 'complete' archive. This volume contains works discovered through this process, valuable documents that reveal the secrets of Saul Leiter's creation, unpublished works, popular colour works and black-and-white works that have not been published so far, as well as works that trace the memories of those closest to him taken in private. As Saul Leiter said, 'Photographs are often treated as capturing important moments, but they are really small fragments and memories of the world that never ends.' This is Forever Saul Leiter.

'A photographer's gift to the viewer is sometimes beauty in the overlooked ordinary' Saul Leiter Photography lovers the world over are now embracing Saul Leiter, who has enjoyed a remarkable revival since fading into relative obscurity in the 1980s. This collection reveals the secrets of his appeal, from his life philosophy and lyricism to masterful colours and compositions. Some 200 works - including early street photographs, images for advertising, nudes and paintings - cover Leiter's career from the 1940s onwards, accompanied by quotations from the artist himself that express his singular world view.
