Summary Mount Athos, the home of Orthodox spirituality and monasticism, has been in existence for at least 1200 years. Home to over 2,000 monks, in twenty glorious monasteries filled with treasures, the peninsula is undergoing a transformation and renewal of faith. In 1956 there was a proposal to build hotels on Mount Athos. Today it hosts up to 1,000 pilgrims every day! Why? This book will help explain this extraordinary place, the current resurgence, the growing population of monks, the sense of purpose, the love and affection that are so much part of the environment. This wonderful story, with a preface by HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, is told through the recollections of the Friends of Mount Athos, an organisation that has, for thirty years, provided support for the institutions, landscape and people. Here are the stories of enchantment from over forty people of different nationalities, customs and beliefs. In addition to the text, there are a collection of special photographs and a map. Tiziano Vecellio (c.1488/90-1576) - known in English simply as Titian - was a remarkably versatile painter, equally comfortable with a wide range of genres and subjects. Unlike many artists from history whose work has been appreciated only after their death, Titian enjoyed fame and success throughout his career, which spanned over seven decades. Based in Venice, Titian received commissions from many local patrons and the Venetian government, as well as many distinguished figures from further afield, such as the Pope, the German emperor and the King of Spain. Titian's contemporary biographer, Giorgio Vasari, praised his skill as a colourist; the artist's careful modelling and depth of colour, shown to especially good effect in mythological works such as 'Bacchus and Ariadne' (1520-3) and 'Tarquin and Lucretia' (1569-71), continue to impress viewers in the twenty-first century.

Peter Ivens is a buzzing and respected name in interior design. The Belgian interior architect is praised for his talent, his timeless style and impeccable realisations. His designs often come about in close collaboration with his partner in crime Bea Mombaers. The two of them have been working together intensively for over a decade, without really dividing their roles in the classic way, blurring the lines between architecture and decoration. For Ivens each house tells its own personal story. ?Custom-made? is a core value in his oeuvre: he tailors each home to the specific needs and personality of its residents. No bells and whistles, no loud, showy signature, but silent luxury stemming from a sophisticated choice in materials and a unique sense of space. Ivens? portfolio is prestigious and diverse, yet his style is recognisable. This beautiful coffee-table book, in which each chapter is dedicated to a different house, is the perfect proof. Except for a brief introduction by design journalist Sisse Bro, the photos by Eefje De Coninck and Senne Van der Ven do all the talking, showcasing Ivens? universe in the most classy and inspiring way.

Porcelain is prized for its vivid whiteness, but it has always posed particular problems for the ceramicist using it. In Contemporary Studio Porcelain, Peter Lane provides a strong history and celebration of the development of porcelain at the turn of the new millennium. He gives particular consideration to the technical achievements, working practices, and aesthetic concerns of ceramicists who work with this most popular medium and its close relative, bone china. The international group of artists featured in this book demonstrates the confidence and versatility found in contemporary porcelain, resulting in a breathtaking look at the exciting and innovative work that is currently being done internationally in this field. Contemporary Studio Porcelain presents a wide diversity of porcelain objects that will both inspire and enthrall. This classic work, now substantially revised, is a must not only for any potter working in porcelain but also for collectors of fine ceramics.

For many years, respected gallerists Peter MacGill, Rudolf Kicken and Edwynn Houk have been collecting Aleksandr Rodchenko's photographs. This book is a curated selection of these images, most reproduced at their original sizes. The hallmarks of Rodchenko's inimitable Constructivist-influenced vision are here to see, regardless of whether he is photographing people, architecture or machinery--bold diagonals, abstract shapes and moving objects cutting through space.

Western-style furniture was a relatively late arrival in Asia, where climates and lifestyles were markedly different from those in Europe. But colonial incursions and circumstances of history conspired to bring about profound changes, and furniture design in Asia blossomed into a major decorative art. Each of the eight countries covered here China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Tibet and the Philippines developed its own particular designs, creating pieces furniture as works of art. Today these diverse pieces are treasured by collectors worldwide, from Manhattan lofts to Parisian apartments, as well as in the countries they originated.

Die vorgestellten Designer (Auswahl): Gunnar Aagard Andersen, Ron Arad, Bar Knell, Fernando & Humberto Campana, Tom Dixon, Gatti, Paolini & Teodoro, Frank Gehry, Gruppe Brand, Greg Lynn, Gaetano Pesce, Karim Rashid, Tejo Remy, Jerszy Seymour, Robert Stadler, Lothar Windels.

Promiscuity is the sequel in Peter Rogier's series The Hunger. In this classic epic of the battle between the sexes we meet Jill and John. Jill is the object of desire, John falls in love with Jill. One day John is on his way to see ''the scientist'', Jill's husband. It's love at first sight, things start to slide: otherwise inconspicious John starts an affair with Jill. On his way to one of their secret rendez-vous John has a bizarre car crash. He survives but will be tranfsormed for ever into The Snowman. He does not have a clear recollection of his past, nor of his affair with Jill. As the Snowman he gradually discovers he can take on properties of other creatures. One day he transmutes into an insectlike personae and the inevitable takes place: he meets Jill again. They recognise each other and, amazingly, Jill explains John that he has killed her. He had to because it was an essential part of the alien transformation. They realise they have only one option for survival: they have to become one. Super heroes as they have become however, the process takes on dimensions of almost cosmic copulation. In the end they merge in The Mental Wagon and take off in time and space seeking new adventures. In a surprising epilogue The Mental Wagon is transformed into a horse, riding the desert of a planet that may well be earth.

Summary Textile industries were one of the driving forces of the urbanisation process in medieval Northwest Europe, and nowhere was their impact so profound as in Flanders, where almost all larger and smaller cities were involved in manufacturing woollens from the 12th to the 16th century. Ypres, the third city in the county, was perhaps the most important concentration of industrial labour and capital in this period. In their heyday in the 13th and 14th centuries Ypres woollens were exported all over Europe and Ypres entrepreneurs and textile workers were able to adapt in very flexible ways to changes in demand. This book investigates not only what the impact of cloth manufacture was on urban society, it also tries to unravel the social mechanisms of industrial development in late medieval cities. It focuses on social inequalities and on the often difficult relationship between the various stakeholders in the urban cloth industry: merchants, entrepreneurs, guild masters and skilled and unskilled workers. Through the analysis work practices, wage levels, investment strategies, gender issues and political aspirations, it unravels how urban industries in the pre-industrial era shaped social relations in the city, how they moulded the urban fabric. Met teksten van Raymond Balau, Thierry Berlemont, Flor Bex, Guillaume Bijl, Gideon Boie, Wim Cuyvers, Bart De Baere, Lieven De Boeck, Sofie De Caigny, Lieven De Cauter, Anny De Decker, Xaveer De Geyter, Lucas De Pauw, Isabelle De Smet, Luc Deleu, Filip Francis, Charlotte Geldof, Pieterjan Gijs, Pieterjan Ginckels, Wim Goossens, Arnaud Hendrickx, Hilde Heynen, Dirk Jaspaert, Anne Judong, John K rmeling, Rudi Laermans, C dric Libert, Ulrike Lindmayr, Andr Loeckx, Johan Pas, Tine Poot, Paul Robbrecht, Sofie Ruysseveldt, Lara Schrijver, Peter Swinnen, Maarten Van Acker, Philippe Van Cauteren, Steven Van den Bergh, Maarten Van Den Driessche, Christophe Van Gerrewey, Hein Van Haaren, Paul Vermeulen, Bart Verschaffel, Marleen Wynants. English text only; Since its inception, T.O.P. office has boosted architecture as an uncompromising social tool to persistently question the terrestrial scale and the delicate balance with mankind. Whichever way you turn it, Earth ? the orb ? is the undeniable alpha and omega for any future stance, action or intervention. An insight Luc Deleu & T.O.P. office have never failed to underscore ? or challenge. Armed with an unsparing but humorous logic, a firm belief in the freedom of the individual, and a persistent commitment to ecology, T.O.P. office continues to hold up a mirror to society. Always unsolicited. Simply because they have to. For this publication, editors Peter Swinnen and Anne Judong were given unlimited access to the archives of T.O.P. office. The title is also the filter through which to examine the living archive. Which projects ? whether conceived in the 1970s or 2000s ? retain the intelligent promise of a future plan? And how can they enlighten designers, architects, urban planners, ecologists, cultural workers, administrations and policymakers of today and tomorrow? A future plan in itself.
