‎Marten Coppens groeide op in Delft, waar de statige grachtenhuizen zijn interesse wekten voor architectuur- en sociale geschiedenis. Tijdens zijn studies in Antwerpen in de jaren zeventig ging hij vaak vogelpikken in caf Het Half Souke aan het uiteinde van de Stoofstraat. Daar viel zijn blik op het huis ?de Bargie? met zijn grotendeels intacte gevel en dubbele deur. Jaren later, afgestudeerd en aan het werk, deed hij een bod op het huis, in de hoop dat de eigenaars het wilden verkopen. Tegen alle verwachtingen in werd zijn bod geaccepteerd. Bij de eerste bezichtiging bleken achter ?de Bargie? nog twee grotendeels authentieke achterhuizen te staan (?de Cluyse?). Na vijf jaar administratief oponthoud werden de plannen goedgekeurd, en in 1992 kon de restauratie van beide sites van start gaan. Sindsdien zorgt een ononderbroken zoektocht naar authentieke bouwmaterialen voor de ontbrekende stukken. Voor sommige onderdelen duurde het jaren vooraleer ze gevonden werden, andere ontbreken ook vandaag nog. Daarnaast speurde Marten Coppens ook naar bouw- en bewoningssporen, en voerde hij grondige opzoekingen uit in de uitgebreide hoeveelheid documenten die bewaard worden in het Antwerpse Felixarchief. Dit boek is de laatste stap in een proces dat vierenveertig jaar geleden begon. ‎DE TOOG, EEN VERDOKEN STRAATJE IN ANTWERPEN, een reis van 5 eeuwen. / A hidden street in Antwerpen, A voyage through five centuries.‎

‎In het begin van de zestiende eeuw telde de Antwerpse binnenstad heel wat piepkleine woningen. Tot tien procent van de huizen bestond uit een enkele kamer op de benedenverdieping met daarboven een zolder. Er zijn er nog maar weinig over, en nog minder wekken het charmante aanschijn van weleer. In januari 2003 wordt de openbare verkoop aangekondigd van een van de laatste originele zestiende-eeuwse ?kamers? in de Toog, een doodlopend straatje in Antwerpen. Het huisje is niet geklasseerd en de ligging in de studentenbuurt geeft weinig hoop om het uit de handen van de ?verkotting? voor studenten te houden. Een buitenkans om dit onvervangbare erfgoed te redden en in zijn volle glorie te herstellen dient zich aan. Na een grondige bouwtechnische inventaris van alle sporen van verbouwingen en wat zich nog in originele staat bevindt, wordt een bouwvergunning aangevraagd. Bij de restauratie staat het gebruik van oorspronkelijke materialen centraal, wat regelmatig voor enig speurwerk en dus vertraging zorgt. Eens het huisje in zijn oorspronkelijke staat is hersteld, is de tijd rijp om zijn geschiedenis en die van de Toog uit te diepen. Die leert ons dat het huisje samen met vier andere gebouwd werd als godshuis, een liefdadige voorziening voor oude mensen. Het pand blijft tot het midden van de vorige eeuw in bezit van de nazaten van de stichter-bouwheer, die het al die tijd gratis laten bewonen. De hoop is dat dit boek ertoe bijdraagt dit gerestaureerde godshuisje en zijn geschiedenis te bewaren, en misschien zelfs een offici le klassering als erfgoed in de wacht te slepen. ‎

Op zijn eigenzinnige manier reconstrueert hij kleine en grote verhalen achter bekende en minder bekende gebouwen, erfgoedsites en vergeten plekjes in Vlaanderen. Nu eens ironisch, dan weer vol mededogen vertelt hij 36 onverwachte verhalen, die vooral over mensen blijken te gaan. De twee wereldoorlogen en onze Vlaamse kunstenaars zijn nooit ver weg. Op een kier is een ongewoon verhalenboek met prachtige foto's van de bekende fotograaf Stefan Dewickere, die met zijn camera de ziel van de plekjes uit Dirk Martens' verhalen tracht vast te leggen.
