For his first museum exhibition in the United States, artist Jan De Cock (Belgian, born 1976) will conceive a floor-to-ceiling installation mixing color and black-and-white photographs with a series of plywood sculptural modules that recall twentieth-century abstraction. Made in response to the particular site in which they are displayed, the pictures will be of specific objects and installation views of MoMA s collection that De Cock has previously photographed from different angles and at times combined with other images culled from the history of art, architecture, and film in an encyclopedic style.

The Flemish baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens was the most renowned northern European artist of his day, and is now widely recognized as one of the foremost painters in Western art history. By completing the fusion of the realistic tradition of Flemish painting with the imaginative freedom and classical themes of Italian Renaissance painting, he fundamentally revitalized and redirected northern European painting. Most accounts of Peter Paul Rubens represent the artist in his cosmopolitan European setting, in line with his demonstrable interests and ambitions. Although such interpretations are typically attentive to the ways in which political, socioeconomic and cultural circumstances and traditions in the Netherlands affected his persona and work, the interaction between Netherlandish contingencies and translocal ambition has rarely been the sustained object of Ruben's studies.

Starting point for Dheedene?s work which consists of a series of drawings on beer mats, was the logo of the Société Gerenerale Bank, an icon of Dheedene?s childhood, which stood for certitude and stability. Through these drawings, the artist analysed, mingled and reassembled the form of this logo to compose new forms. He chose this specific support because of the ideal format and the specific texture of the raw material. The round corners of the mats easily invite to rotate them. The drawings resulted in a series of collages, exposed in an exhibition and an artist book. Both were entitled Walks, a reference to the many walks the artist undertakes himself, but equally to the walking of the pencil on the limited surface of the pre-determined support.

Rediscovery of an architectural gem in the heart of Bruges The Adornes family has left a special legacy that can be admired to this day in Bruges. The Adornes Estate with its mansion and alms-houses reminds us of the family?s aristocratic lifestyle. The fascinating Jerusalem Chapel, a replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, brought great prestige to the Adornes family with its unusual architecture and powerful symbolism. Who were the Adornes? When did they arrive in Bruges and how did they establish their position as one of the most influential Bruges families of the fifteenth century? Ten authors, led by historians Jan Dumolyn and Noël Geirnaert, highlight the different facets of this extraordinary dynasty: from a critical genealogical analysis to a study of the collections, including an analysis of the architectural heritage and a presentation of current management aspects of this historical treasure which is still owned privately by its founders? descendants.

The twenty-two essays in this volume are contributed by Belgian, French, and American scholars to honor the memory and work of Adrienne Fontainas (1929-2010). The interdisciplinary scholarship this community of international scholars has produced is of lasting importance in underlining the significant role of Brussels from 1870 to 1914. A leading European scholar and bibliophile, Adrienne Fontainas served as Vice President of the International Association of Bibliophiles and membre d'honneur of the Royal Society of Bibliophiles and Iconophiles of Belgium. Her groundbreaking books on the Symbolist poet Stephane Mallarme and his Brussels' editor Edmond Deman (Edmond Deman editeur : Art et edition au tournant du siecle and Edmond Deman : Publications de la librairie) are model studies of the book publishing trade in France and Belgium. The essays in this book explore a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields, including art history, book collecting, publishing, literature and music, and cover subjects such as Felicien Rops, William Degouve de Nuncques, Symbolism and Surrealism, Maurice Maeterlinck and Emile Verhaeren, Paul Signac, Victor Horta, Edmond Picard, Andre Fontainas, Edmond Deman, and Franz Liszt in Belgium. In addition, a comprehensive bibliography of Adrienne Fontainas' writings in the visual arts, literature, and music, as well as a discussion of her working methodology, are included. This book contains contributions in French and English.

How can contemporary theorisations of consent help us to nuance our understanding of consent and coercion in the Middle Ages? And what can reconsidering medieval attitudes towards consent offer to our own ?consent culture?? Contemporary feminist approaches have identified consent both as a potent political framework for liberation and as an inherently limited concept that opens out onto other important ethical questions. Proceeding from this moment, this book looks in two directions to understand the varied ways in which structural inequalities impact meaningful consent and facilitate coercion in the Middle Ages and today. Building upon the momentum of ?medieval consent studies? as a newly defined field, this volume expands the focus beyond rape and raptus, assessing more varied representations of consent and coercion through an intersectional consideration of power, inequality, and sexual violence. The contributions bring together different methodologies, cultural contexts, and literary traditions to highlight literature?s capacity to reflect otherwise undocumented forms of sexual vulnerability. Offering a compelling case for integrating critical approaches like trans history, codicology, animal studies, ecocriticism, and disability studies into this field, Reconsidering Consent and Coercion demonstrates the vital necessity of a nuanced and inclusive understanding of the past for our present discourses of consent. Summary The Codex Amiatinus is perhaps the most famous copy of the Bible surviving in Western Europe. A fascinating and elusive manuscript, with a suite of decorated folios, it was made in Anglo-Saxon England around the turn of the eighth century at the twin monastic foundation of Wearmouth and Jarrow as one of three such 'pandects'. Created at the monastic foundation celebrated in the work of the Venerable Bede, this vast and luxe manuscript was sent by the Northumbrian monks as a gift to the Pope in 716 and, after a sojourn of some 900 years at Monte Amiato (Tuscany), it was donated to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence in the eighteenth century. As a result of an international conference held to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the departure of the manuscript from Northumberland and coinciding with the production and presentation of a facsimile of the Codex to the Museum at Jarrow, this volume - the first devoted to the Codex Amiatinus - brings together twelve essays that offer a new appraisal of this remarkable book, and of the contexts that surrounded its production. Encompassing its text, its images, its social, political and ecclesiastical contexts and its later medieval legacy, the contributions to this volume highlight several previously unrecognised aspects and details of the manuscript that further our understanding of the Codex as a book, and as inheritor and progenitor of manuscript traditions in its own right. Visual artist, choreographer, writer and director, Jan Fabre has been one of the most influential figures on the European scene for over twenty years. His provocative forays into all different art forms are aimed at breaking down the artistic and moral barriers of his times. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of Fabres works at the MAXXI in Rome, the monograph brings together, for the first time, the action art and performances of the Belgian artist from the 70s to the present: drawings, thinking models, collages, films, photos and other documentation that lay the groundwork for a rediscovery of dozens of Fabres performances and interventions, both public and private, held in Belgium and abroad. The extreme, even brazen exploration of the human body, which frequently scandalizes viewers, is linked to the idea of metamorphosis, which Fabre may have derived from that passion for the sciences he inherited from his great-grandfather, the esteemed entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre. Jan Fabre has devoted much of his career to studying the human body and its transfiguration, central themes in his work
