‎De pelgrimstocht die de Italiaanse geestelijke Jan Baptist Confalonieri op 20 april 1594 aanvatte, was zeker geen uitzonderlijke gebeurtenis. Vele duizenden Portugezen hadden voor hem de Cami o Portugu s gevolgd, van Lissabon (of elders in het land), over Coimbra en Porto naar het noorden, naar Santiago de Compostela, of zoals het toen genoemd werd, Sint-Jacob in Galicia. Bijzonder aan de reis van Confalonieri was dat hij er een gedetailleerd dagboek van bijhield, en dat dit bewaard is gebleven in de archieven van het Vaticaan. Bijzonder is ook dat Confalonieri een Italiaan was, en dus dingen zag en noteerde die voor een Portugees of Spanjaard te evident waren om op te schrijven. Behalve een Spaanse vertaling in een tijdschrift in 1964, bleef het dagboek van Confalonieri tot vandaag de dag onuitgegeven. ‎Edouard Fiers is n van de gerenommeerde 19de-eeuwse Ieperse kunstenaars. Hij is geboren in 1822 in Ieper. Eerst volgt hij les aan de Ieperse Academie. Dankzij de financi le steun van de stad kan hij zijn artistieke opleiding, samen met enkele andere Ieperse kunstenaars, verder zetten in Brussel. Hij ontwikkelt er een stijl die nauw aansluit bij zijn neoclassicistische leermeesters. Nieuwe stromingen in de beeldhouwkunst laat hij aan zich voorbijgaan en hij kiest voor de klassieke traditie. Na zijn studies blijft Fiers in Schaarbeek wonen. Ondertussen wint hij enkele belangrijke prijzen en wordt zijn werk getoond op roemrijke salons, vooraanstaande tentoonstellingen en in nieuw opgerichte musea. Uit erkentelijkheid voor de financi le steun van de stad bij zijn artistieke opleiding, schenkt hij afgietsels van al zijn belangrijke beelden aan de stad. ‎The twenty-two essays in this volume are contributed by Belgian, French, and American scholars to honor the memory and work of Adrienne Fontainas (1929-2010). The interdisciplinary scholarship this community of international scholars has produced is of lasting importance in underlining the significant role of Brussels from 1870 to 1914. A leading European scholar and bibliophile, Adrienne Fontainas served as Vice President of the International Association of Bibliophiles and membre d'honneur of the Royal Society of Bibliophiles and Iconophiles of Belgium. Her groundbreaking books on the Symbolist poet Stephane Mallarme and his Brussels' editor Edmond Deman (Edmond Deman editeur : Art et edition au tournant du siecle and Edmond Deman : Publications de la librairie) are model studies of the book publishing trade in France and Belgium. The essays in this book explore a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields, including art history, book collecting, publishing, literature and music, and cover subjects such as Felicien Rops, William Degouve de Nuncques, Symbolism and Surrealism, Maurice Maeterlinck and Emile Verhaeren, Paul Signac, Victor Horta, Edmond Picard, Andre Fontainas, Edmond Deman, and Franz Liszt in Belgium.
