Summary Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100-170 AD) is one of the most influential scholars of all time. While he is also the author of treatises on geography, optics and harmonics, his fame primarily stems from two works on the science of the stars, dealing with mathematical astronomy (the Almagest) and astrology (the Tetrabiblos). The Almagest and the Tetrabiblos remained the fundamental texts on the science of the stars for some 1500 years. Both were translated several times into Arabic and Latin and were heavily commented upon, glossed, discussed, and also criticised and improved upon, in the Islamic world and in Christian Europe. Yet, the reception of Ptolemy in medieval cultures is still to a large extent a terra incognita of the history of science. The Arabic and Latin versions of the Almagest and the Tetrabiblos are for the most part unavailable in modern editions, their manuscripts remain largely unexplored and, generally speaking, their history has never been systematically investigated. This volume gathers together fifteen contributions dealing with various aspects of the reception of Ptolemy's astronomy and astrology in the Islamic world and in Christian Europe up to the seventeenth century. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd er in Nederland weinig gebouwd, afgezien van verdedigingswerken. Daardoor wordt deze periode in veel architectuurgeschiedenissen min of meer overgeslagen. Dat betekent echter niet dat er niets gebeurde. De Duitse bezettingsmacht installeerde de Nederlandsche Kultuurkamer, die onder andere de opdracht kreeg om de architectuur op nationaalsocialistische leest te schoeien. Het ging daarbij niet alleen om de ideologische aspecten van het vak maar ook om de praktische, zodat de Bond van Nederlandse Architecten opgeheven zou kunnen worden. In het kielzog van de machtsstrijd die zich ontspon, ontstonden verschillende ideeen over een nieuwe architectuur. Bouwkunst en de Nieuwe Orde richt zich op architecten die werden aangeklaagd, en vaak veroordeeld, wegens collaboratie. Net als alle andere Nederlanders konden zij worden berecht via het Bijzonder Strafrecht. Voor ?lichtere? gevallen werd een Ereraad voor Architectuur opgericht, waarin vakgenoten het gedrag van collega?s moesten beoordelen. Hoewel dit werk van naming en shaming achteraf alom als een mislukking werd beschouwd, hebben de uitspraken grote invloed gehad op de beeldvorming over de betrokkenen. De reputaties van een hele generatie architecten werden erdoor gered of gebroken.

Two remarkable Iranian world-maps were discovered in 1989 and 1995. Both are made of brass and date from 17th-century Iran. Mecca is at the centre and a highly sophisticated longitude and latitude grid enables the user to determine the direction and distance to Mecca for anywhere in the world between Andalusia and China. Prior to the discovery of these maps it was thought that such cartographic grids were conceived in Europe ca. 1910. This richly-illustrated book presents an overview of the ways in which Muslims over the centuries have determined the sacred direction towards Mecca (qibla) and then describes the two world-maps in detail. The author shows that the geographical data derives from a 15th-century Central Asian source and that the mathematics underlying the grid was developed in 9th-century Baghdad.

J. Samuel White & Company was the oldest firm on the Admiralty List and built 252 ships for the Royal Navy alone. The yard's closure in 1966 ended 300 years of shipbuilding during which time the company had gained acclaim from mercantile and naval customers alike. Famed early on for fast Revenue cutters and naval brigs, in its final years Royal Navy destroyers earned it great distinction. Highly innovative, it developed and patented many pioneering products while other innovations included semi-diesel engines, heat exchangers, air conditioners and compressors, besides a range of marine thruster units. Not only did the company build ships and boats but it also constructed a range of marine aircraft. During the First World War, White's production accounted for 100 ships, including twenty-seven destroyers, and 201 seaplanes. Production during the Second World War added up to 317 ships, among them twenty-six destroyers and a large minelayer. Illustrated with photographs of these and many of the company's other products, this book tells the story of J. Samuel White and its subsidiary concerns, a business built on a reputation of quality which earned it the slogan: White's-built - well-built! .

Summary The medieval courtly lyric, the site for the first extended literary exercises in Occitan, French, Italian and German, is one of the foundations of how we think about European literature. Since the nineteenth century it has in many accounts underpinned a system of linguistically-informed national traditions. David Murray shows in 'Poetry in Motion' how categorizing poetry under headings like 'French' or 'Italian' poetry can obscure the thinking of medieval poets and scribes about what constituted a language. De schilder en boer Felix de Boeck (1898-1995) presenteerde zich graag als mystiek aangelegde eenling. Op zijn boerderij in Drogenbos, nabij Brussel, leefde hij op afstand van de artistieke ontwikkelingen in de hoofdstad. De Boeck maakte als volwassene twee wereldoorlogen mee. Hij ontving een groot aantal schilders, dichters en politici op zijn boerderij en maakte portretten van Gandhi, Roosevelt en zelfs van Hitler. De ontwikkeling van De Boeck van figuratieve naar abstracte kunst is in dit boek verweven met de politieke ontwikkelingen in Vlaanderen. De wijze waarop de Belgische overheid na de oorlog omging met het verleden frustreerde hem sterk. Hij zocht aansluiting bij een alternatieve, Vlaams-katholieke kunsttraditie. David Veltman kreeg voor dit boek inzage in het omvangrijke priv -archief van De Boeck, maar hij raadpleegde ook talrijke archieven van collega-kunstenaars, kunstinstellingen en het naoorlogse krijgsgerecht. Zo wist hij het turbulente leven van De Boeck tot een samenhangend verhaal te smeden. David Veltman werkte aan deze biografie als doctoraatstudent bij het Biografie Instituut (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen). In diverse bundels en tijdschriften publiceerde hij artikelen over Belgische 20e eeuwse biografie en geschiedschrijving. Hij was acht jaar werkzaam in het Haarlemse veilinghuis Bubb Kuyper.

Mark Verstockt | Genesis and development of a form language monograph Mark Verstockt (1930-2014) played an essential role in the Belgian post-war art scene. Starting from the fifties, his work fits in with the European New Tendencies and the ZERO movement, which became evident through Verstockt?s inclusion in the exposition ?Monochrome Malerei? in Leverkusen, the first big ZERO manifestation in 1960. During the mid-sixties, Verstockt attained a geometrical visual language which was a constant motif in his work from that point onwards. He became a respected defender of Minimal Art, with a preference of the square.
