‎Herscheppen. Ontwerpend onderzoek voor het Projectbureau Herbestemming Kerken 2016-2021? Sinds enkele decennia neemt het gebruik van de kerken voor de eredienst af, waardoor er vraag is naar nieuwe bestemmingen voor deze gebouwen. Van 2016 tot 2021 konden Vlaamse lokale besturen die een van hun kerkgebouwen een nieuwe invulling wilden geven, een beroep doen op het Projectbureau Herbestemming Kerken. Met een rijk ge llustreerde en fraai uitgegeven publicatie blikken we terug op de werking van het Projectbureau, en op het ontwerpend onderzoek dat in dit kader het licht zag. Kerken zijn in de Vlaamse dorpen en steden belangrijke gebouwen. De parochiekerk markeert niet alleen het centrum van een geloofsgemeenschap, ze fungeert ook als een ruimtelijk ankerpunt voor de buurt, wijk of gemeente. Een parochiekerk is altijd meer dan haar naakte bestemming, meer dan enkel een ruimte voor de samenkomst van gelovigen. Het gebouw geeft uitdrukking aan een cultuur en geschiedenis die tot op de dag van vandaag onze menselijke conditie bepalen, en waarin de verhouding van de mens tot ?het hogere? een centraal thema vormt. De meeste kerken zijn dan ook veel hoger, groter, donkerder of lichter dan hun functie strikt genomen vereist.?? Sinds enkele decennia neemt het gebruik van de kerken voor de eredienst af, waardoor er vraag is naar nieuwe bestemmingen voor deze gebouwen. Door hun bijzondere ruimtelijke eigenschappen en hun historisch en symbolisch belang zijn ze ook interessant wanneer hun gebruik wijzigt. Ze vormen dan ook een uitgelezen voorwerp van ontwerpend onderzoek. Omdat de vraag naar een betekenisvolle invulling van de te herbestemmen kerkgebouwen zich opdrong, werd in 2016 het Projectbureau Herbestemming Kerken opgericht. Tot de opheffing ervan begin 2022 realiseerden zes multidisciplinair samengestelde onderzoeksteams binnen dit kader, onder begeleiding van co rdinator Niek De Roo, maar liefst 141 haalbaarheidsonderzoeken voor parochiekerken, verspreid over heel Vlaanderen. Telkens zette een team van architecten, restauratiespecialisten en stedenbouwkundigen, in dialoog met de opdrachtgevers, al zijn expertise en creativiteit in om nieuwe kansen te scheppen voor dit religieuze erfgoed. Voor elk van de bestudeerde kerkgebouwen werden met het oog op nieuwe functies diverse ruimtelijke scenario?s ontwikkeld en verbeeld. In dit boek delen architecten Sara Vermeulen en Els Vervloesem en Vlaams Bouwmeester Erik Wie rs reflecties en getuigenissen over de werking en historiek van het Projectbureau. Charlotte Ardui en Sven Sterken, beiden verbonden aan de Faculteit Architectuur van de KU Leuven, stelden een ruime en rijk ge llustreerde ?bloemlezing? samen uit het unieke archief van het Projectbureau Herbestemming Kerken. Ze groepeerden een selectie van voorstellen in tien lemma?s, die telkens een werkwoord als titel hebben: openen, opdelen, afzonderen, toevoegen, wegnemen, integreren, faciliteren, ontsluiten, activeren, verbinden. Ze staan elk voor een bepaald type interventie die bijdraagt tot een verbreed gebruik van het kerkgebouw. ‎Emeric Vagh-Weinmann qui signait ses oeuvres de son seul prénom, était né en Hongrie mais il vint très jeune en France. Cocteau disait de lui qu'il était un "réaliste de l'âme". C'est l'ambassadeur de France aux Etats Unis James Maurice Gavin (1907-1990), qui le fit découvrir à Los Angeles et à New York. La palette vibrante et colorée d'Emeric sut à merveille traduire le gigantisme, la violence et la beauté sublime de New York. Emeric Vagh-Weinmann est décédé en 2012.‎
