Summary The documents in this volume were written by people of the West Uighur kingdom, which flourished from the second half of the 9th century to the start of the 13th century in and around the eastern Tianshan region including the Turfan Depression, and by Uighurs of the 13th to 14th centuries when this region had come under the rule of the Mongol empire (i.e. former West Uighurs). Old Uighur is a form of Old Turkic. This Corpus includes over two hundred letters that were written in Old Uighur using the Uighur script, which derives from the Sogdian script. Although the use of paper had at the time not yet spread to Europe, these letters are all written on paper. The ink is similar to that which was used in China, but the letters were written with reed or wooden pens rather than with writing brushes. The majority of these letters were discovered in the 20th century in China, either in the Turfan Depression in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region or in the famous Mogao Caves of the Thousand Buddhas at Dunhuang in Gansu, and a small number were unearthed at the remains of Kara-khoto in the Gansu Corridor.

Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition ?Dirk Braeckman. Echtzeit 29/03/24-19/01/25 at FOMU. Braeckman is interested in photographs with imperfections, in empty interiors, everyday objects, evocative places or objects that leave much to the imagination. He has chosen from the FOMU collection functional photographs, made without artistic ambition. He recognised certain qualities and commonalities with his own work in these atypical images. Rephotography and experimentation have always formed part of Braeckman?s artistic practice, though the trajectory to the final image is always different. For the FOMU exhibition, he worked for the first time with an existing collection of photos. Braeckman took photos of the chosen images and printed them. He then over-painted, smeared or cut holes in the prints. He photographed the results and processed them further in his analogue and digital darkroom. The original meaning of the photographs has been altered through the removal of context, the change in format and the addition of titles. A functional document is transformed into a piece of art, a timeless visual poem that raises more questions than it answers. ?Echtzeit? refers to Braeckman?s bridging of the past and present. Simultaneously and in real-time, three perspectives: of the original photographer, of Braeckman and of us, the viewers come together. The Kaiserpanorama is again part of the collection exhbition this year: a highlight of the FOMU Collection, on display again after undergoing a complete restoration. The device was a modern piece of automated machinery when it was made in 1905 and presented a 3D photographic spectacle to the public. Twenty-five people at a time can sit on stools circling the viewing cabinet and enjoy the magic of three-dimensional images. Dirk Braeckman has selected fifty new stereo images from the FOMU collection for the panorama. Would you like to see this unique machine in action? In early modern culture, civic festivals and emblem books were amongst the more privileged genres of Early Modern culture. Although both are connected in their use of word and image, they are nonetheless separated in their very essence. The former, a public event celebrated usually at night and involving, alongside ephemeral monuments, lights, fireworks, music, ceremonies, and theater performances, was for the spectator an all-encompassing experience. It was intended to propagate either the ruler or the city?s political agenda. The latter was conceived as an intellectual pastime and intended to be read, deciphered, and discussed within the private sphere, in the company and studious ambiance of the literati. Emblems and festivals, nonetheless, maintained a kind of symbiotic exchange. Whereas public monuments of the triumphal entries found their way into the printed form of festival books, emblems migrated from their printed form into the public sphere, where they were used to adorn the ephemeral monuments of the triumphal entries. How then, do the practices of emblem reading, which require careful decryption of words and images, relate to the viewing practices of triumphal processions? The book examines this paradox and argues that the inclusion of emblems in festivals reveals the hermeneutic mechanism of the learned. By using emblems, the designers of civic festivals marked their territory within the power hierarchies and established their dignity and authority as experts in both the civic and intellectual circles. In the festival ambit, festival emblems epitomize the perfect paradoxical union of persuasion and erudition. The ten studies gathered here, written by internationally renowned scholars from Europe, Israel and the United States, explore the richness and uniqueness of these two major books, as well as their sources and their reception. A number of these studies accentuate specific themes and motives, some of which are discussed here for the first time. Other studies relate to the linguistic particularities, examined here in a novel and original manner.
