‎Gris a tudi le dessin technique la Escuela de Artes y Manufacturas de Madrid de 1902 1904. Au cours de cette p riode, il a galement r alis des dessins pour des journaux et des magazines locaux. Entre 1904 et 1905, il tudie la peinture avec Jos Maria Carbonero. l'origine, Gris a t influenc par l'Art Nouveau allemand. En 1906, il s'installe Paris, o il se lie d'amiti avec Henri Matisse, Georges Braque et Fernand L ger. En 1915, son ami Amedeo Modigliani fait un portrait de lui. Gris a t guid Paris par son ami et compatriote Pablo Picasso. Bien que Gris ait continu soumettre des illustrations avec une touche d'humour noir des magazines tels que L'Assiette au beurre, Le Charivari et Le Cri de Paris, il a commenc peindre s rieusement en 1910. Ses premi res peintures l'huile ont t cr es en 1911, en utilisant des gris monochromes et tons de terre. En 1913, il commence peindre de mani re plus color e, mais toujours dans un style cubiste. En 1913, Gris a galement commenc utiliser la technique du collage. En 1922, il con oit des d cors et des costumes de ballet pour Sergue Diaghilev. Gris a crit sur sa th orie de l'art. Il donna sa plus importante conf rence sur ce sujet la Sorbonne en 1924, sous le titre Des possibilit s de la peinture. Gris est d c d d'une insuffisance r nale au printemps 1927 l' ge de 40 ans. Il laisse derri re lui sa femme Josette et un fils Georges.‎
