Summary In recent years, archaeologists working at Norse sites across the North Atlantic have excavated a number of very small churches with cemeteries, often associated with individual farms. Such sites seem to be a characteristic feature of early ecclesiastical establishments in Norse settlements around the North Atlantic, and they stand in marked contrast to church sites elsewhere in Europe. But what was the reason behind this phenomenon? From Greenland to Denmark, and from Ireland to the Hebrides, Iceland, and Norway, this volume presents a much-needed overview of small church studies from around the North Atlantic. The chapters gathered here discuss the different types of evidence for small churches and early ecclesiastical landscapes, review existing debates, and develop a synthesis that places the small churches in a broader context. Ultimately, despite the varied types of data at play, the contributions to this volume combine to offer a more coherent picture of the small church phenomenon, pointing to a church that was able to answer the needs of a newly converted population despite the lack of an established infrastructure, and throwing new light on how people lived and worshipped in an environment of dispersed settlements. Summary This book is the first study to provide a comprehensive historical and theoretical account of the Academia Leonardi Vinci. Pederson brings together literary sources to offer a new interpretation of the academy not as one singular entity, but as a collection of academic modalities in Renaissance Milan. Eventually these various modalities converged around their namesake Leonardo da Vinci, as well as the architect Donato Bramante. This group drew together not only humanists, as in other early Italian academies, but also practitioners of a range of disciplines that ultimately gave way to a new kind of group. This collective of creative personages generated forms of expression that explored the liminal spaces between art, geometry, architecture, and the natural world, which in turn stimulated conversation and debate. This activity made it different from other early Italian academies, and in this way it offered something entirely new.

This catalogue raisonne marks the first comprehensive exhibition of photographs by Jim Dine. Since 1996, the internationally acclaimed artist has used cameras and lenses to make images that he has turned into prints using heliogravure and digital ink-jet processes as well as conventional color and black-and-white photographic printing. Combining his zest for image making with a long devotion to self-expressive materiality, Dine imbues his photographs with an intensity that is occasionally traumatic but invariably beautiful. Dine's photographs present a familiar repertory of images: tools, hearts, and a torso of Venus as well as the more recent iconography of a crow, a skull, a Pinocchio doll, and an odd-couple ape and cat. For Dine photography is one among other media, the camera but one of many tools with which to make pictures. This refusal to privilege one method over another helps explain how, in the space of only six or seven years, Jim Dine has managed to produce such a large number of haunting photographic images that remain consistent with the tenor of his art as a whole while expanding its technical repertoire and range of possibilities.
