‎In 1872 reisde Clement Griscom, een jonge ondernemer uit Philadelphia, naar Antwerpen om er de Belgische vennootschap Soci t Anonyme deNavigation Belge-Am ricaine (kortweg sanba ) op te richten. Tijdens een periode van ongeveer 60 jaar, tussen 1873 en 1934, vervoerde de rederij onder de merknaam Red Star Line om en bij twee miljoen emigranten naar de Nieuwe Wereld. Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) was een belang rijke getuige niet alleen van die massale volksverhuizing, maar tegelijk van zijn tijd en omgeving, de wereldhaven waarin hij opgroeide en leefde. Zijn uitzonderlijke tekeningen, pastels en schilderijen van gelukzoekers kregen pas 50 jaar na zijn dood opnieuw enige aandacht. Door talrijke publicaties en exposities in de Verenigde Staten en Europa werd Van Mieghem een Antwerps icoon en een internationaal bekende vertolker van de Europese migratie tijdens het begin van de 20ste eeuw. De kunstenaar leefde in een maatschappelijk erg bewogen periode van ontluikende democratie. Gedragen door medeleven en idealisme wou hij de artistieke getuige zijn van een bevolkingsgroep die haast nooit in beeld kwam. De wereld trok immers letterlijk aan zijn deur voorbij en die naamlozen gaf hij een gezicht. Zijn virtuoze talent en zijn beklijvende authenticiteit hebben ertoe geleid dat Van Mieghem als kunstenaar met zijn oeuvre een ereplaats in de Europese kunst inneemt.‎

‎This volume refers to medium-sized panels and fragments of stained-glass windows from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 18th century, found in public buildings, churches, museums and private collections in the present five provinces of Flanders (Belgium). Many of these panels and fragments are totally unknown to the public as they have never been displayed, nor published. Nevertheless they demonstrate an important aspect of stained-glass production and stained-glass conservation. Where large windows in churches are well known to the public, it is often forgotten that even more stained glass was created for dwellings of the noble or patricians, house chapels, guild rooms, smaller spaces in abbeys, etc. It also became clear that virtually no glass was thrown away and larger fragments and panes were recycled as ?stop gaps? or integrated in composite panels, the so called ?vitraux d?antiquaires?. Furthermore archaeological sites nearly always reveal quite small pieces of glass, which could not be used for repairs or as ?cullet? in the glass production cycle. ‎Voor het eerst integraal vertaald in het Nederlands Maurice Maeterlinck begon zijn literaire carri re als dichter. Zijn eerste volwaardige publicatie was een reeks van drie ndertig gedichten, die meteen de wereld van de letteren verbaasde. Niet lang daarna volgde een tweede bundel, met symbolistische po zie pur sang waarin angst en noodlot de hoofdrolspelers vormden. Het is merkwaardig dat Maeterlinck, van wie de po zie ongemeen creatief en vernieuwend bleek, zijn latere gedichten niet meer gebundeld heeft. Dat zou de Leuvense hoogleraar Joseph Hanse in 1965 in zijn plaats doen. Met alles samen zeventig gedichten beslaat Maeterlincks po zie slechts een klein deel van zijn immense oeuvre, maar ze is wel van uitzonderlijk belang. De kwalificatie 'meesterwerk' is dan ook eerder regel dan uitzondering. Deze verzamelde gedichten overspannen de hele schrijverscarri re van de Gentse Nobelprijswinnaar en laten ons zien hoe veelzijdig Maeterlincks talent was en hoe versatiel zijn verbeelding.‎

Hij pint zich niet vast op een schriftuur maar verkent diverse schildertechnieken en -stijlen. Vaak dienen internetbeelden of eigen foto's als vertrekpunt. Dit leidt tot een oeuvre waarbinnen figuratieve afbeeldingen en abstracte beelden op elkaar inwerken. Ghekiere is gefascineerd door ongecompliceerde, clichematige schoonheid: stillevens met planten of bloemen, of portretten van opgesmukte dames onder meer. Dit soort schoonheid stelt hij in vraag door middel van een ongewoon coloriet, in elkaar vloeiende kleurschakeringen, negatiefbeelden en vervormde composities. Schoonheid evolueert en is immers uiteindelijk vergankelijk. De uitdeinende cirkels die de kunstenaar vaak bovenop zijn beelden spuit, wekken het gevoel op dat zijn schilderijen veranderlijk en beweeglijk zijn en dat er binnen een beeld meerdere perspectieven naast elkaar bestaan. Schoonheid wordt door Ghekiere zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk in een ander perspectief geplaatst. Tegelijk ondermijnt zijn artistieke ingreep de leesbaarheid van zijn beelden van binnenuit: complexloze clicheschoonheid wordt omgezet naar een nieuwe esthetiek gekenmerkt door ongrijpbare complexiteit. En precies deze onvatbaarheid daagt bij het kijken naar Ghekieres schilderijen uit. Het oeuvre van Joris Ghekiere behoort, zoals dat van verschillende Belgische schilders van zijn generatie, tot de beeldbevragende actuele schilderkunst. Daarbij wordt het medium schilderkunst zelf ingezet om het beeld zowel op inhoudelijk als op visueel vlak te bevragen. De tentoonstelling in S.M.A.K. toont werk van de late jaren '90 tot vandaag. As a painter, Joris Ghekiere (1955, Kortrijk) occupies a highly individual and ambiguous position. He explores a variety of painting techniques and styles, rather than tying himself down to just one. His own photos and images from the internet often provide the starting point. This results in an oeuvre in which figurative depiction and abstract images interact with each other. Ghekiere is fascinated by uncomplicated, cliched beauty: still-lifes with plants or flowers, or portraits of dolled-up ladies and suchlike. He questions this sort of beauty by means of an unusual range of colours, shades of colour that bleed into one another, negative images and distorted compositions. Beauty is subject to evolution and is, after all, ultimately transient. The circles rippling outwards that the artist often sprays on top of his images give the feeling that his paintings are variable and mobile and that several perspectives exist in parallel within a single image. Ghekiere both literally and figuratively puts beauty in a new perspective. At the same time his artistic intervention undermines the comprehensibility of his images from the inside out: cliched beauty with no complexes is converted into a new aesthetic characterised by an impalpable complexity. And it is precisely this elusiveness that is the challenge when looking at Ghekiere's paintings. Like that of many Belgian painters of his generation, Joris Ghekiere's oeuvre is in line with the form of contemporary painting that questions the nature of the image. ‎Peintre et graveur, Hieronymus Cock (Anvers 1518-1570) fut un des premiers artistes du nord de l'Europe a creer, avec son epouse Volcxken Diericx, une maison d'edition d'estampes. Des 1548, 'Aux Quatre Vents' publia des centaines d'eaux-fortes et de gravures. Inspirees des fresques et des tableaux de Raphael et de Bronzino, des ruines classiques et des sculptures antiques, mais aussi des dessins d'artistes septentrionaux comme Maarten van Heemskerck et Frans Floris, elles furent diffusees dans toute l'Europe, ou elles contribucrent a repandre les ideaux de beaute de la Renaissance. De Koninklijke Bibliotheek van Belgi (KBR) voert al jarenlang onderzoek naar dat minder bekende werk van Bruegel en brengt nu voor het eerst de volledige prentencollectie samen in een tentoonstelling, ter gelegenheid van het Bruegel-jaar. De expo vindt plaats van 15 oktober 2019 tot en met 16 februari 2020 in het Paleis van Karel van Lotharingen in Brussel, dat voor deze gelegenheid opnieuw zijn deuren opent na een lange renovatie. Rond het midden van de zestiende eeuw werd Vlaanderen het internationale productie- en handelscentrum voor grafiek. Samen met zijn uitgever, Hieronymus Cock, speelde Bruegel een sleutelrol in deze bloeiperiode. De tentoonstelling focust op het unieke vakmanschap en de ondernemerskwaliteiten van beide heren en toont aan de hand van verschillende staten en edities het lange maakproces dat grafisch werk ondergaat, van ontwerptekening tot afgewerkte prent. De onderwerpen van Bruegels tekeningen en prenten zijn ontzettend rijk. Steeds weer roept hij imaginaire werelden op, bevolkt door zonderlinge figuren, en verrast hij de kijker met vele uitzonderlijke details. De luxueuze catalogus bij deze unieke tentoonstelling reproduceert de werken op ware grootte en geeft de lezers zo de kans om van heel dichtbij kennis te maken met de beroemde prenten van Bruegel. Gespecialiseerde kunsthistorici, verbonden aan de KU Leuven en de Koninklijke Bibliotheek, geven in vijf essays een boeiend inzicht in de fascinerende wereld van Bruegels grafische werk.
