‎De pelgrimstocht die de Italiaanse geestelijke Jan Baptist Confalonieri op 20 april 1594 aanvatte, was zeker geen uitzonderlijke gebeurtenis. Vele duizenden Portugezen hadden voor hem de Cami o Portugu s gevolgd, van Lissabon (of elders in het land), over Coimbra en Porto naar het noorden, naar Santiago de Compostela, of zoals het toen genoemd werd, Sint-Jacob in Galicia. Bijzonder aan de reis van Confalonieri was dat hij er een gedetailleerd dagboek van bijhield, en dat dit bewaard is gebleven in de archieven van het Vaticaan. Bijzonder is ook dat Confalonieri een Italiaan was, en dus dingen zag en noteerde die voor een Portugees of Spanjaard te evident waren om op te schrijven. Behalve een Spaanse vertaling in een tijdschrift in 1964, bleef het dagboek van Confalonieri tot vandaag de dag onuitgegeven.
