Architect Joseph Cuypers (1861-1949) was een uniek en vernieuwend Nederlands architect. In een tijd waarin ambachtelijke, traditionele bouwkunst de toon zette ? de neogotische stijl die zijn vader Pierre Cuypers grote bekendheid bracht (het Centraal Station en het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam) ? zocht zoon Joseph inspiratie elders. Bij talloze ontwerpen voor kerken, villa?s, wooncomplexen en voor de Amsterdamse Effectenbeurs, liet hij zich be nvloeden door eigentijdse vormentaal en stijlkenmerken uit den verre en andere geloofsrichtingen. Ook toonde hij zich een modern stedenbouwer met een voorliefde voor tuinwijken. Veranderde zijn stijl in de jaren van traditioneel naar expressionistisch, altijd hield hij oog voor de gebruiker. De kerkganger moest bij binnenkomst de sacrale sfeer voelen en maximaal zicht op het altaar houden. Voor elke plek en elke bewoner bedacht hij een eigen ontwerp, waardoor zijn bouwwerken steeds verrassen. Terecht zijn vrijwel al zijn kerken op de monumentenlijst geplaatst.

Created by Jan Fabre in 2011, this marble sculptural suite was featured for the first time during the 54th Venice Biennale, where it occupied the prestigious Nuova Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Misericordia. In the artist's home city of Antwerp, PIETAS will be the first exhibition to be held in the renovated Parkloods in Park Spoor Noord. In PIETAS, created in 2011, Fabre's five white marble sculptures describe variations on the theme of the Piet , the iconic image of Mary cradling the dead body of her son Jesus in her arms. Fabre's interpretation presents concepts such as grief and acceptance, death and rebirth as well as man's capacity for imagination, inventiveness and art.
