‎ Erfgoedvereniging ?De Statievrienden? verzamelde de jongste zes jaar een stapel documentatie die hen werd aangereikt door vrienden en inwoners van de statiebuurt en die ze ook zelf ontdekten in allerlei archieven, boeken en? ?koekendozen?. Na twee driedaagse expo?s en vier heemkundige bijdragen voor het jaarboek van De Gaverstreke vinden De Statievrienden de tijd rijp om uit te pakken met een overzicht van een honderdtal figuren, die als medewerker bij de Spoorwegen, als ondernemer of als inwoner van de wijk, hun ?sporen? hebben verdiend. Het boek wordt vanaf 27 juni 2020 verdeeld. Dat in 1839 ?den ijzeren weg? en halteplaats kreeg was voor Waregem een zegen. Die toegangspoort tot de wereld heeft het toen armoedig boerendorp geen windeieren gelegd. Rond het eerste stationnetje, een omgebouwde timmermansloods, kwamen er mensen wonen. De begoede burgerij liet statige huizen bouwen langs de nieuwe Stationsstraat en de horeca floreerde in tientallen netwerkplaatsen. De zakenlui troffen mekaar Au Pavillon of in Hotel du Parc en regelden, tussen het bridgen door, het reilen en zeilen van het snel groeiende dorp aan de Gaverbeek. Bij het begin van de 20e eeuw waren alle grote bedrijven rond het station gevestigd en woonden de burgemeester, de gemeentesecretaris en de stationschef in dezelfde huizenrij, op een boogscheut van het station. In hun publicatie belichten de Statievrienden een honderdtal figuren die in de stationsbuurt woonden en/of werkten en die, elk op hun manier, bijdroegen tot ?het floreren? van hun gemeenschap. Met zijn allen zetten ze Waregem ?op het goede spoor?. De gezinnen, waarvan de helft nog in armoede leefde in 1839, vonden werk in de bedrijven en? bij de Spoorwegen zelf. Deze positieve ?dwarsliggers? worden niet vergeten en krijgen een eresaluut in dit boek.‎
