Publication at the occasion of the re-opening of the museum Constantin Meunier. This museum is located in Ixelles in the house-cum-studio of artist, painter, sculptor and draughtsman Constantin Meunier (1831-1905). The items on display trace more specifically the evolution of the master between 1875 and 1905, this "second life" in his own words, during which his Realist talent focused more on the social and industrial aspects of Belgium, first through painting and drawing and then, from 1885 onwards, with his return to sculpture to become one of the greatest artists of the genre. Paintings like The Broken Pot are echoed by important sculptures like The Hammerer, a whole people of plaster and bronze that deeply marked his day and continued to influence Realist art well into the first decades of the 20th century. HISTORY OF THE COLLECTION Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) had this beautiful housecum-studio built towards the end of his life. Sheltering an extensive collection of over 700 works, the house was acquired by the Belgian state in 1936 and opened to the public in 1939. Attached to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and subsequently renovated, it has since 1986 presented a selection of about 150 works and documents.

Summary Roger II (c. 1095-1154), Sicily's first king, was an anomaly for his time. An ambitious new ruler who lacked the distinguished lineage so prized by the nobility, and a leader of an extraordinarily diverse population on the fringes of Europe, he occupied a unique space in the continent's charged political landscape. This interdisciplinary study examines the strategies that Roger used to legitimize his authority, including his relationships with contemporary rulers, the familial connections that he established through no less than three marriages, and his devotion to the Church and Saint Nicholas of Myra/Bari. Yet while Roger and his family made the most of their geographic and cultural contexts, it is convincingly argued here that they nonetheless retained a strong western focus, and that behind the diverse m lange of Norman Sicily were very occidental interests. Drawing together sources of political, social, and religious history from locations as disparate as Spain and the Byzantine Empire, as well as evidence from the magnificent churches and elaborate mosaics constructed during his reign, this volume offers a fascinating portrait of a figure whose rule was characterized both by great potential and devastating tragedy. Indeed, had Roger been able to accomplish his ambitious agenda, the history of the medieval Mediterranean world would have unfolded very differently. .

Proceedings of the International Symposium Paul Coremans Held in Brussels, 15-17 June 2015 In June 2015, the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) organized an international symposium in honour of its founder and first director Paul Coremans (1908-1965). Exactly fifty years after his death, it was a unique opportunity to look back on his extraordinary career and the impact of his innovative ideas and vision on the conservation and restoration of works of art. His ground-breaking insights have been widely recognized in Belgium and all over the world. Paul Coremans? fields of interest were broad: the conservation of works of art in museums, preventive conservation and climate control, the protection of cultural heritage in times of war ? a highly topical issue -, as well as the status and role of the restorer, the importance of photographic documentation and scientific research, or the detection of art forgeries. Coremans? belief in the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of works of art still inspires many art historians, conservator-restorers and scientists today. This book ? the Proceedings of the 2015 Brussels Symposium ? presents twenty original contributions that reveal Coremans? multi-faceted personality and action. It is the first monograph devoted to this visionary Belgian scientist and Monuments Man. Richard Deacon is one of the most important sculptors of his generation. His sculptures fascinate with their formal power and the craftsmanship with which they are made. In addition to large-scale works - not infrequently intended for public presentation - Deacon also created sculptures in a small format over the course of his four-decade career. The range of materials used is considerable: plywood and metal are used as well as plastic, leather or clay. There are usually only a few basic elements that make up the complex, intertwined structures. For the first time, one aspect of Deacon's work is at the center of an exhibition that was hardly ever seen in public before. The selection of exhibits reflects the dual function that drawing has for Deacon - showing design drawings that contributed to the mental clarification in the creation process of a particular sculpture, as well as autonomous drawings. Added to this are graphic prints - an area in Deacon's work that has become more important, especially in recent years. What repeatedly connects Deacon's work on paper with his sculptural works is the fundamental examination of the interaction between construction and free form, surface and space. Exhibition and monograph provide for the first time a representative overview of drawing and print graphics Deacons from its beginnings to the recent time on the basis of more than one hundred works. Exhibition: 26th August to 13th November 2016
