Parmi les premiers étudiant à l'Académie d'Architecture de Blondel, Charles d'Aviler avait un point de vue catholique et pratique, conçu pour l'artisan et l'étudiant. Jean Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond continua l'ouvrage à partir de 1710, en rajoutant notamment de nombreuses figures inédites.
